CANELO ALVAREZ has been urged by his coach to fight Jermall Charlo next in May before a Mexico homecoming in September. The Mexican superstar is coming off a blockbuster 2021 in which he claimed the undisputed super-middleweight crown.

Free agent Canelo has since been offered a pay-per-view return by Al Haymon’s PBC banner against middleweight champion Charlo.
But Eddie Hearn put forward a two-fight deal, starting with a shot at Dmitry Bivol’s WBA light-heavyweight title and a trilogy bout with Gennady Golovkin.
The man in charge of mapping out Canelo’s next move is trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso.
And he is leaning towards unbeaten American Charlo, due to his favoured marketability.
Reynoso told Fight Hub TV: “I think a Charlo fight is more media-friendly.
“Charlo is a fighter that sells more, a fighter that more people follow, and because of that, it’s a more attractive fight.”

If Reynoso has it his way, Canelo will welcome Charlo to the 168lb division in Vegas for Cinco de Mayo weekend, Mexico’s annual celebration on May 5.
But for the first time since 2011, he wants the four-division king to return to Mexico and the national team’s 87,00+ seater Azteca Stadium.
Reynoso said: “We are looking to fight in May or September in the US and the last one in Mexico.
“Let’s see if we can fight in Azteca Stadium. We are in Canelo’s best moment of his career. Hopefully, we get a chance to fight there.” 
Charlo, 31, is the current WBC title holder at middleweight, but would have to jump a division to contend for Canelo’s belts.
Reynoso said: “Canelo is at the level where he can fight with anyone. I think the difference will be the weight and we have to be careful with that.
“He’s fighting in weight classes where he feels strong and 168 is where he feels strong.”

Golovkin, 39, in 2017 was unfortunate to only walk away with a draw against Canelo, 31, before losing the rematch a year later.
He has since remained at middleweight but would also need to move to super-middle to secure a trilogy with his great rival.
Reynoso added: “Let’s see if something can happen in May or September.
“Truth is, Golovkin has raised his hand recently to fight against Canelo. There’s intent there for a trilogy.
“Yeah, 168. If [Golovkin] wants he can come up. Saul can’t go down. He can’t make 160 anymore. 
“We are going to be working with the promoter that has the best fighters and best fights for us – let’s see who we can have a good fight with.”

RICKY GERVAIS is used to delivering hilarious punch-lines – but he has also thrown a few punches in the past too.The Golden Globe-winning actor had a boxing match in 2002 for charity, going up against Anthea Turner’s then-husband Grant Bovey.

It was a torrid affair with very few worthwhile Extras, despite both ‘fighters’ swapping the Office for extensive training ahead of the bout.
Gervais vs Bovey was broadcast on BBC, dubbed as The Fight.
The two clobbered each other for three 90-second rounds, with The Office star Gervais announced as the winner.
That meant the funnyman, now 60, won £5,000 for his chosen charity – but that was viewed by many as the only positive from the unlicensed bout.
It certainly did not lead to an after life in the fight game

Speaking at the time, he said: “One thing I don’t want to be seen as is a killjoy – I know they’re doing this for charity.
“But there are certain ways of going about this. What I’m unhappy about is that it’s unlicensed boxing.
“It’s a very dangerous sport and it needs to be regulated properly. You can’t just go to the gym for six weeks and think you are a boxer.
“It takes a long time and a lot of dedication.

LOGAN PAUL said he rejected a rematch with Floyd Mayweather in Dubai following their pay row. Paul in June welcomed the boxing legend back into the ring in an eight-round exhibition that went the distance.

But in the months since, the American YouTube star, 26, has alleged Mayweather, 44, is yet to pay him the full amount owed.
So when his manager Jeff Levin was approached about a rematch in the Middle East this month, they told them where to go.
Paul said on the Maverick Club: “They asked me if I wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather again, Jeff did – one of Floyd’s guys.
“I told him to f*** himself, first of all you have to pay me the rest of the money that you owe me.
“Second of all go f*** yourself, but what if I give it to Jake?”
Younger brother Jake, 25, is 5-0 as a professional boxer and started a mass brawl with Mayweather after stealing his hat in May.

The American legend then eight years later topped the all-time box office buys following his win over Manny Pacquiao, which sold 4.6m PPVs.
But De La Hoya claimed a rematch with Mayweather – despite their pair both being retired – would smash that number out of the park.
He told DAZN: “I strongly feel that a fight with Floyd would be massive, would be huge. That alone would attract Floyd Mayweather.
“I strongly feel a fight with me and Floyd can easily generate five million homes.
“With all the technology, there’s so much that you can integrate in terms of publicising the event, in terms of making it that much bigger.
“You now have the meta worlds, the NFT’s. You have that whole social media platform. It can be pretty big.”

De La Hoya, 48, hung up the gloves in 2008 after being dominated by Pacquiao, 43, the Filipino icon who retired himself last year.
But the Golden Boy in March 2021 announced he would make a boxing comeback and later last year signed to fight Vitor Belfort, 44.
In the end, De La Hoya pulled out after being hospitalised following a brutal bout with Covid.
Mayweather a few months earlier had also returned to the ring in an exhibition with YouTuber Logan Paul, 26.
And he is now in talks with 20-year-old vlogger Money Kicks – real name Rashed Belhasa – for a February 20 exhibition on a Dubai HELIPAD.
But De La Hoya slammed the farcical fight, and called for Mayweather to fight him instead.

He said: “Obviously, he’s all about the money. This would be probably the biggest fight out there for him.

“I think that people want to see real fights. People want to see legend versus legend, champion versus champion.
“This is what we do. This is what we’ve done for practically all our lives.
“People, not that they’re getting tired of seeing these exhibitions, but people want to see real fights. They want to see real legends in the ring.
“Fighters like Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and myself, we are real legends who put it out on the line and were in the ring for many years, fighting for world titles for decades.”

A last-ditch bid to make an undisputed heavyweight title fight between Fury and the undefeated Usyk fell through last week just hours before the WBC champ’s showdown with Whyte went to purse bids.
Promoter Frank Warren claimed the Saudi showdown collapsed because AJ wanted an extra ‘£3.7million’ to step away from his rematch with Usyk, a demand that sent the champ up the wall.
Joshua has stuck to his guns and will now have his chance at redemption against the Ukrainian.
That could see Fury even take on the winner if he successfully overcomes Whyte.
Now the undefeated star has hinted that he could follow UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov in quitting with a perfect record.
Sharing a picture on Twitter of the MMA king holding a Manchester United top at Old Trafford, he captioned it with: “This man did it right. Got in & won & got out on top. Big respect @TeamKhabib.”

Fury has hinted he could retire in the near future after knocking out Deontay Wilder in their trilogy bout last October.
He told the Telegraph: “I don’t know what’s going to happen.
“I’ve got one fight left on my contract with Top Rank and ESPN and we’ll see what that is.
“But I’m not thinking about boxing right now. I don’t know how many fights I’ve got left.
“I don’t know if I need to fight any more. I don’t know what the future holds.”
He added: “I don’t have any goals in boxing, I have done everything and won everything, the only one to do it in my era.
“I will always have been the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, Ring magazine champion, that will not evaporate in history, but once it is done, it is done and you cannot get it back.
“Once you are done, it doesn’t matter how many belts you have, who you beat, what your record is. You are just another bare bum in the shower and I have always had that opinion.
“You have to enjoy it while it is here because when it is gone it is gone. Even the wins and the glory die down and sooner or later you just become another person and a has-been.”
