Olympic gold champion Galal Yafai wins professional debut in style with knockout on Lawrence Okolie’s undercard

TEAM GB Olympic golden boy Galal Yafai leaped into the professional ranks with a ruthless fifth-round stoppage of tough Mexican Carlos Bautista. Seven months after grabbing flyweight gold at the delayed Tokyo games, Yafai, 29, refused the traditional four or six round intro and signed up for a 10-rounder against a live opponent.

And he took to the paid game like a duck to water, hunting big shots and landing them on Bautista’s ribs and face until his corner saved him after five one-sided rounds.
Yafai said: “I enjoyed it in there, he was a tough opponent, I caught him with big shots and he wouldn’t go.
“I have waited so long to make my pro debut and it was everything I hoped and dreamed of.
“I want to move at a fast pace, I want to be stepped up and become a world champion.”
There were whipped hooks to the body and arrow-like straights that sliced through the visitor’s guard in the opener.
Yafai had his whisker checked in the second when Bautista landed a left hook but he passed the test and retaliated generously.

The 8st division is hardly known for its knockouts but Yafai was precise and punishing, battering Bautista at the end of the round and coming close to ending it early.
The Birmingham ace was clipped again at the start of the three but absorbed the blows and fired back, smiling as he inflicted the assaults.
The right side of Bautista’s face was a horrible mess before the third even ended as his cheek swelled up into his eye.
And when brave Bautista was floored in the fifth, even though he beat the count, his team threw in the towel and compassionate Yafai informed ref Mark Lyson of the surrender.
And the youngest of three fighting brothers will waste no time setting up his next bout as he aims to be a world champion inside his first 10 pro bouts.

Watch Jordan Gill’s sensational KO secure comeback win with TWO SECONDS left leaving opponent needing oxygen in ring

JORDAN GILL scored a sensational come-from-behind knockout against Karim Guerfi to be crowned European champion. The Brit had purposely pinned himself in his own corner as he appeared to be struggling for balance and breathe.

And just as Guerfi started to really lay on unbearable pressure, Gill turned the tie on its head in the most dramatic of fashion.
A counter right hook while up against the ropes for Gill left his French opponent sent tumbling backwards and out for the count.
The referee immediately waved off the fight as Guerfi was given oxygen and treated by medics.
The fight started as a nip and tuck affair with both men landing sharp shots.
Gill was the busier but was guilty of staying in the pocket for too long, allowing Guerfi to capitalise with counters.
Towards the end of round six, Gill began to ship shots as he covered up, allowing the flow of the fight to change.

He was in round seven slammed to the floor, having been hurt earlier and dropped moments beforehand.
The Frenchman looked to be within a punch of finishing the fight in the eighth round but Gill, remaining in his corner, survived.
The former Commonwealth champion had just about thrown enough right hands in response to keep the referee from stopping the action.
And in round nine it was moving towards a similar story, with Guerfi on top, throwing heavy punches.
But suddenly, Gill came around the side of Guerfi’s guard and brutally knocked the away fighter out.
There was only TWO seconds remaining in the round and capped off a remarkable comeback win for Gill.

And the Brixton Body Snatcher is already putting in the hard graft ahead of his clash with his former sparring partner.
On Friday, Whyte shared a video of himself performing some heavy unilateral dumbbell bench presses in his Portugal training camp to his Instagram story.
Whyte made lifting the heavyweight weights look incredibly easy as he was told by his trainer that he had more reps in the tank.
The fan favourite’s caption read: “Just over here minding my own business.”
Whyte’s clip of his weights session came three days after he officially inked his contract to face The Gypsy King.
On Tuesday afternoon, Whyte posted a video of himself dripping with sweat following an intense workout to his Instagram story.

After it was announced the pair would clash at Wembley, Fury said: “Who else can’t wait for the fight? The best of Britain.
“I can’t wait to punch Whyte’s face in! “I’ll give him the best hiding he’s ever had.

Prior to that, Fury vowed: “I’m going to absolutely BUST Dillian Whyte in like a cheap f***ing water balloon.

Anthony Fowler fight delayed after opponent Lukasz Maciec forced to get temporary tattoo removed over breaking rules

ANTHONY FOWLER’S fight was delayed after his opponent Lukasz Maciec was forced to have a temporary tattoo removed. Cameras backstage revealed the Pole having his stomach scrubbed by a member of his corner team to get rid of sponsorship logos.
Anthony Fowler’s fight was delayed after his opponent was forced to have a temporary tattoo removed
It was then confirmed the British Boxing Board of Control refused to allow Maciec to fight until it was removed.
As a result, Fowler’s ten-round return fight at London’s O2 Arena was slightly delayed but Maciec did box with sponsors on his back.
Liverpool’s 2016 Rio Olympian went on to win on points as he secured a return win.
Fowler had in October been beaten by Merseyside rival Liam Smith by eight-round stoppage.
It sparked a move up in weight for Fowler, who is eyeing titles at middleweight.
He told DAZN before his comeback fight: “I’m gonna be 31 soon and after two losses, I haven’t really got much time to waste.

Josh Taylor’s controversial win over Jack Catterall to be investigated by British Boxing Board of Control this week

THE British Boxing Board of Control will launch an investigation into the scoring of Josh Taylor’s controversial title defence against Jack Catterall next week. The Scot retained his light-welterweight titles in Glasgow on Saturday night via a controversial spilt-decision victory over the Chorley clubber.

The scorecards turned in by experienced judges Ian John Lewis and Victor Laughlin caused outrage in the boxing community, so much so BBOBC will ask the pair to explain their scoring of the bout.
BBOBC General Secretary Robert Smith told the Daily Telegraph: “We will be looking into it.
“There were some very close rounds, it was a very close, very scrappy fight, and I have asked for reports from the judges which we will be studying this week.
“Our judges are honest people, and scored it as they saw it. I was there, and I thought Catterall pipped it.”
A heartbroken Catterall turned in a stellar performance on enemy territory and many thought he’d done enough to end Taylor’s reign as undisputed 140lb king.
The 28-year-old wrote on Instagram: “You know what hurts the most, it wasn’t for me, I done all of this for my family my team, my town and country.

“I just want to tell you we must stay united against this Russian aggression.
“Don’t let it continue happening in Ukraine, don’t let it happen in Europe and eventually in the world.
“United we are strong. Support Ukraine. Thank you.”
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, 35, a close friend of Lomachenko’s, said: “I’d like to speak to the people of Russia.
“If we consider ourselves as brothers, orthodox ones. Do not let your children to set out to our country, do not fight with us.
“Also I’m addressing this to the President Vladimir Putin. You can stop this war. Please just sit down and negotiate it with us without claims.
“Our kids, wives, grannies are hiding in the basements…
“We are here in our own country, we cannot do it other way – we are defending… Stop it! Stop this war.”

MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s reaction to the fight
Boxing fans, pundits as well as fighters of the past and present were left in disgust as the challenger saw the performance of a lifetime go unrewarded.
And now Catterall’s Chorley MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle has vowed to contest the decision.
He tweeted: “It was a disgraceful decision by two of the boxing referees!
“I will be speaking with the sports minister. The result is a travesty of justice.”
Officials Victor Loughlin and Ian John-Lewis came under scrutiny for scoring the fight in Taylor’s favour.
But Howard Foster showed some sense with his 113-112 score to Catterall, 28. with both fighters winning six rounds.

Taylor, 31, was floored in round eight and both boxers were deducted a point each during the 12-rounder.
The Scottish star insisted he won afterwards, as he said: “It wasn’t my best performance, but I believe I got 100 per cent got the win.”
But Catterall’s heartbroken trainer Jamie Moore – a champion boxer in his own career – gave an emotional interview post-fight.
Moore fumed: “It’s difficult to put into words.
“You’re talking about a kid who has worked all his life to wait for that moment, who stepped aside, who has waited three years for his opportunity.
“It was a disgraceful decision by two of the boxing referees! I will be speaking with the sports minister. The result is a travesty of justice.Jack Catterall’s Chorley MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle
“He stepped aside, did the right thing for boxing, stepped aside to allow a unified champion on the promise that he would get the opportunity.
“He gets the opportunity, he performs like that and beats the champion in his own backyard and gets absolutely robbed.
“Think about the message that sends to people watching. My son is 16 and just getting into boxing.
“He’ll be looking at that and thinking, why should I get into boxing?
“The moment you think you’ve worked all your life and you are going to be crowned world champion after a performance like that, and it’s snatched away from you.
“It’s disgusting, I don’t even know what to say. You’ve asked Jack to come down here, as if Jack can come and speak. He’s absolutely heartbroken.”

Taylor has long eyed a jump up to the glamoured 147lb welterweight division to chase the super-fights.
And it appears his struggles to shrink down and make the 10st limit are now over.
Taylor, 31, told Sky Sports: “Most definitely this will be my last fight at 140lbs. That’s the last fight at 140lbs.
“Time to move up. Time to bulk up. Time to get some steaks in me and move up.
“I made the weight comfortably. I wasn’t lying when I made the weight. I’ve got a nutritionist on board.
“I made the weight very well but I’m getting to that stage where I’m 31 now.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET TAYLOR TO BEAT CATTERALL AT 20/1
“Making 140lbs and depleting my body takes a little bit out of me each time.
“It definitely showed in my performance a little bit but that’s my last one at 140lbs, for sure.”
Taylor, floored in round eight and had a point deducted, was handed a widely unpopular split-decision win.
Boxing fans, pundits as well as fighters of the past and present were left in disgust as Catterall, 28, saw the performance of his lifetime go to waste.
And with Taylor’s impending move up in weight and post-fight comments, it looks as though a shot at revenge is off the cards.
Taylor said: “It wasn’t my best performance, I put a hell of a lot of pressure on myself with it being my homecoming.
“It showed in the first half, but once I got my rhythm I started catching him with the bigger shots.
“It wasn’t my best performance, but I believe I got 100 per cent got the win.”
