Andy Ruiz Jr closes in on next fight but set to miss out on Deontay Wilder as he considers future after Tyson loss

ANDY RUIZ JR is closing in on a mouthwatering heavyweight fight against Luis Ortiz. The Mexican, who shocked the world in June 2019 when he beat Anthony Joshua to be crowned unified champ, was being lined up to face Deontay Wilder.

But the former WBC king is still considering his future after two shattering losses to Tyson Fury.
Now, according to World Boxing News, veteran Ortiz, 42, is the more likely option for Ruiz Jr.
It is reported that ‘if Wilder comes back he’d undoubtedly be first choice’ – but Ortiz is now a viable option.
The Cuban has won his last two fights by knockout after being stopped himself by Wilder in November 2019.
Last time out he KO’d former IBF champion Charles Martin in the sixth round, after being floored himself in rounds one and four.
But Ruiz Jr, who secured a points win against Chris Arreola last time out, will have some work to do before getting back in the ring.

World Boxing News adds that he ‘isn’t in fighting shape’ and ‘isn’t in a progressive training camp’ with mentor Eddy Reynoso.
Both Ruiz Jr, 32, and Ortiz are looking to get back in the mix for world titles.
But seemingly their respective paths will be determined by Wilder’s big decision, with boxing manager Al Haymon waiting in the wings to pitch his next big fight.

“Dillian Whyte has called for this fight for years, and while he is a deserving challenger, no heavyweight can match the Gypsy King.”

UK boxing is on the rise with Khan vs Brook earning 500,000 pay per view buys late last month, despite claims the pair had left the fight too late.
Fury vs Whyte is also set to take place in front of a packed-out Wembley on April 23, with the attendance possibly set to be increased to a record 100,000.
Eubank Jr called out Kell Brook to be his next opponent but it seems a fight is unlikely to take place until the pair can agree on a weight they are both happy with. More

Fury also suggested his bout with Whyte will be his last before he retires so he likely wants to go out with a bang.
In the eventful press conference, Fury gave his absent challenger the nickname of ‘Frillian Whyte Knickers’, and later posted a photoshopped photo of Whyte to go with his new name.
He also claimed he would go to war to fight for the UK following news that boxers Oleksandr Usyk and Vasiliy Lomachenko have taken up arms. More

And one man sure to be keeping a close eye on developments is former unified heavyweight world champion Joshua.
Speaking ahead of Lawrence Okolie’s cruiserweight showdown against Michal Cieslak at the O2 Arena on Sunday night, Joshua revealed who has his backing in the Fury vs Whyte battle of Britain.
AJ also hinted he is keen to come to blows with Whyte again after the pair first fought as pro’s back in 2015.
He told iFL TV: “It’s a good opponent [for Fury], it’s a good [title] defence against Dillian Whyte.
“Dillian Whyte needs to come in, look at what Tyson Fury does and reacts to, and do the complete opposite. Maybe work the body, and be conditioned to go the distance.
“But I hope Dillian trains hard [and] doesn’t underestimate Tyson. Because it’s his first shot for Dillian, I think he’ll be hungry, do you know what I mean?

“This ain’t like his tenth time fighting for a title, you can have a little hiccup along the way. This is his first time fighting for the title.
“I’m rooting for Dillian, even though I hate him, and I want to smash him one of these days.
“Go on Dillian, I’m with you all the way.”
AJ and the ‘Brixton Bodysnatcher’ met in the ring for the British title over six years ago, with Joshua winning via a seventh-round TKO.
Plans were also in place for Joshua and Fury to fight in a mouthwatering undisputed clash last year, before a court of arbitration ordered the latter into a trilogy battle with Deontay Wilder.

Joshua is currently gearing up for a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, but Russia’s invasion of Usyk’s home country, Ukraine, may cause uncertainties regarding that bout.
When asked whether he was concerned for Usyk, AJ seemingly referenced Usyk and his countrymen, and former heavyweights, Vitaly and Wladimir Klitschko.

Tommy and Paul were set to fight in December before Fury suffered a broken rib and chest infection.
Frampton predicted before the cancelled clash that American YouTuber Paul would get the better of Tommy.
And dad John was not happy as he confronted Frampton in front of cameras.
He said: “You think Jake Paul’s a boxer?”
    Frampton replied: “No I don’t think he’s a boxer.”
To which John said: “Why do you think he can beat Tommy then? Answer the question now. You disappoint me, I looked up to you and I supported you.”

Frampton answered: “I’m just trying to be honest John.”
Fury retorted: “Honest? Honest saying a YouTuber could beat a Fury? Are you p****d?”
Frampton said: “I’m not p****d, I’m just trying to be honest.”
Fury declared: “I don’t wanna talk to you. Get your facts right or get off the job.”
John’s comments came following Frampton’s prediction for Tommy vs Paul in November.
He told TalkSport: “To be honest, I don’t really know much about them.
“I’ve seen Jake Paul, little highlights of him. I’ve seen Tommy Fury, I was actually working for BT for one of his fights as a pundit.
“I think that if you put a gun to my head, I think I fancy Jake Paul in that fight, if I’m being honest.” More

But unbeaten Fury is demanding there to be no officiating from his compatriots following Josh Taylor’s controversial win over Jack Catterall.
Catterall outclassed the Scottish southpaw on Saturday in Glasgow, but was cruelly robbed of becoming the new undisputed super-lightweight world champion.
Fans instantly took to social media to express their anger at the scoring, as they labelled it as ‘one of boxing’s worst ever decisions’.
The result led to the British Boxing Board of Control to investigate the outcome, with the ringside judges to be asked to explain their cards.
Fury’s promoter Frank Warren then stated that if he had it his way, no British judges would score the upcoming heavyweight title fight.
And Fury then told talkSPORT: “I’ve seen an article recently where Frank Warren said there would be no British judges for this fight and I reiterate that as well.

“Those words echo around my training camp. We don’t want British judges for this fight. We want proper, experienced, judges who will do the right thing.
“If Dillian Whyte beats me, give him the decision. Do not try and rob anybody of this fight, give the man the decision, give the man what he deserves.
“If I win, do the same for me. In boxing, these fighters don’t want any gifts, they don’t want robbery decisions.
“People want to win if they win, and lose if they lose. In the game, we’ve seen so many boxing decisions go the opposite way and I’m just thinking ‘what are they watching’.

“As for the fight that happened the other night, both fighters tried their best and done what they could do best.
“It’s not for me to say who won or lost, because I know both guys, but it was a good fight, I watched it and it was a great fight for the fans.
“Both fighters did their best.” More

Tyson Fury reveals his new nickname for Dillian Whyte ahead of grudge fight and vows to smash rival on St George’s Day

TYSON FURY reckons bitter rival Dillian Whyte waved the white flag of surrender by refusing to show at Tuesday’s launch for their April 23 Wembley showdown. The 33-year-old WBC champ put on a one-man show in the bowls of English football, awarding the challenger a new nickname of ‘FRILLIAN WHYTE KNICKERS’ and vowing to triumph on St George’s Day in honour of the great dragon slayer.

Breathing fire and insults he backed the collection of brave Ukrainian boxers taking up arms against Russia, labelled himself a super-car and Whyte an old banger and then got promoter Frank Warren to pretend to separate them from a phantom scuffle.
It was the full Tyson Fury one-man show roaring into London and running over everything in its way.
“It’s the Fury roadshow,” roared Fury, who later posted an image of Whyte wearing knickers on his social media pages.
“It is never about the opponents. It could be any old face on the poster because it’s all about me and my legacy and boxing career.
“It doesn’t matter if it is Dillian Whyte, Joe Joyce, Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk or Derek Chisora.
“There is only man on these shores who can deliver and it is me.”

As always, Fury was a tornado of contradictions, one minute Whyte, 33, was a dangerous dance partner with a vicious left hook and a booming right hand.
The next he was a clapped out motor trying to keep up with his luxury speedster.
“He has won 28 of 30 fights,” the Morecambe giant said. “He has a good left hook and a big right hand. He is a big and strong bloke and can knock people out.
“But there is a gulf in class between me and him and if I get knocked out by him then I don’t deserve to be heavyweight champion.
“If I cannot look like Muhammad Ali against this guy then I have a problem, I will smash him to pieces. You will see a Ferrari vs a Vauxhall Corsa.”
Whyte’s team are at war with hall-of-fame promoter Frank Warren over who is hosting the bout after a record-breaking purse bid of £30million.
The challenger insists he is being poorly treated and short-changed, the champion’s team insist they are trying to negotiate the terms of the deal.
Fury, though, had little time for the tit-for-tat talk of private jets, escrow payments and contracted media appearances.
“I have known Dillian for a long time, we go back to around 2012,” he explained. “And before he always fired back at me and caused a ruckus but now he has given me so much more confidence, he is terrified.
“He is scared to go face-to-face with me, he will see he is getting smashed to bits, it’s fear and terror.
I believe one billion per cent that I will annihilate him. I have never had a doubt, even going to Germany to beat Wladimir Klitshcko. Tyson Fury
“I don’t blame him for not being here because I might have put him on stretcher if he was here and be getting remanded in jail.
“And anyway, Tyson Fury versus his own shadow sells so I will make sure the people are entertained.”
Despite having the spotlight burning solely on him, Fury never squinted or sweated.
Self-belief, he explained, has been his secret weapon through all 32 fights, more so than the gargantuan size, the fabulous footwork, new-found punch power and MENSA-level ring IQ.
“I am very confident,” he grinned. “I believe I will win, I believe one billion per cent that I will annihilate him.
“I have never had a doubt, even going to Germany to beat Wladimir Klitshcko.
    “Confidence is my biggest asset.
“I would never let that go, I have to be supremely confident and I believe I can beat him with one hand tied behind my back.”

Fury will have to appeal to mainstream fans to sell out Wembley, like Anthony Joshua has twice done.
But he insists he doesn’t care where boxing’s pedantic rankings writers have him in the rich annals, let alone the casuals.
He said: “I always said I never cared what people thought of me or how they rated me, I don’t care if I am No1 or 201.
“Right now is my day in the sun but, when I am done boxing is done for me and I will walk away from the sun with a good tan.
“I have come close to losing and losing everything but every time I have turned it around.
“I started as the brash contender and over-confident kid, I was a disaster waiting to happen.
“Now I have overcome everything, against all the odds, it’s like I have had two careers and this is the best bit. This is a slam dunk.” More
