THERE can be no more diverse character in the entire England team at next month’s Commonwealth Games than a man called Delicious.Delicious Orie, a 6ft 6in, 16 stone-plus super-heavyweight will be one of the boxing squad’s gold-medal favourites.

And there can be no greater role model than Orie, 25, for every immigrant kid in this country trying to integrate and overcome adversity.
Delicious certainly comes from a technicolour background. He was born in Moscow, his father Justin is Nigerian and his mother Natalie is Russian. The family suffered obscene and sometimes violent racism on a daily basis.
After Justin was assaulted on public transport, he uprooted his family from Russia and came to Britain, settling in Wolverhampton.
Delicious said: “I was only seven when I came here and because I couldn’t speak a word of English it caused me some cultural problems.

“But life was much harder in Moscow – some people didn’t like me purely because of the colour of my skin.”
It didn’t take young Orie long to overcome his problems and thrive in his new environment. He won a place at Aston University and graduated with a 1st Class Honours Economics degree.
In his early teens his sport was basketball and he had no interest in boxing until he saw Anthony Joshua on TV knockout Charles Martin to win the IBF world heavyweight title.
Delicious told me: “From that moment AJ became my idol and I was hooked. I went and joined the Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club in Birmingham and found out I was a pretty good boxer.

“They say never meet your idols because you will be disappointed. Not only did I meet him I sparred with him on numerous occasions and he couldn’t have been more supportive.

Considering he didn’t start boxing until he was 18, Orie has made remarkable progress under coach Mick Maguire and despite no youth experience he’s lost just 5 of his 45 contests.
He says he relies on his speed and is more of a Muhammad Ali than a Mike Tyson.
Having received his British citizenship more than a year ago, it’s a style that won him a bronze medal at the European championships in Armenia.
With his academic qualifications, it is no surprise Delicious is articulate and extremely level-headed. Even if he gets the gold in the final at the NEC arena on August 7 he will ignore all incentives to turn pro.

Ortie said: “I want to box for Britain at the Paris Olympics in two years. I will be 27 which is still young for a heavyweight. Because I started so late, what I lack is experience.
“The way I look at it is by the time I think I’ll be good enough to turn pro AJ, Fury and Usyk will be retired.
“And if boxing doesn’t work out I have my degree to fall back on and I can go into a business career.”
Maguire, who has coached many promising youngsters, predicts: “With hard work and the right breaks Delicious can achieve everything AJ has and I think probably surpass that as well.”
The one dark cloud in Orie’s life is the war in Ukraine. He revealed: “I have family in Russia and Ukraine and I find this horrible war soul-destroying.”
I couldn’t resist asking him if his Christian name his parents gave him had caused him any grief or embarrassment growing up like the “Boy called Sue” country and western icon Johnny Cash sang about.

It comes after fury partnered with Don McLean for a new rendition of American Pie – 50 years after the song’s release.
The heavyweight world champion has previous experience dueting with another singer too, appearing on Robbie William’s song Bad Sharon in 2019.
Speaking on TalkTV tonight, Paris said: “Everyone keeps telling Tyson ‘you’re a great singer, you’re a great singer’ but they’re actually offering him a record deal.
“Record labels are coming to him and offering him songs and albums and I keep going, ‘he can’t sing. What are you doing? Who is listening to these songs’.
“I’m a bit negative on that one.”

Reports suggest that the boxing legend wants to buy an NBA team.
Floyd revealed on June 14: “I’ve been talking to certain people for the last six months.
“That’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes, but I’ve never come out to publicly talk about it with the media.
“My team and I have been working behind the scenes with the NBA.
“I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”
Away from sport, Floyd owns a strip joint close to his digs in Las Vegas.
The gentleman’s club – named Girl Collection – is located close to iconic hotels including the MGM, Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

50 Cent – real name Curtis Jackson – claimed in 2020 former pal turned rival Mayweather needed a boxing return because his “money’s gone”.
Money responded in typical fashion, posting a picture of a humongous shoe closet that requires a ladder to reach the top.
He captioned the image: “This is just my shoe closet part 1.”
And Jake Paul – brother of YouTuber Logan who fought Mayweather in a 2021 exhibition – also claims the Money Man is actually “broke”.
He alleged: “Floyd is broke, man. I’ve been saying it the whole entire time.
“I think he probably spent it on all the girls he pays to be around him.”
But Mayweather was scathing in his response to the Paul brothers, insisting that they had to be patient in waiting for pay-per-view money.
Floyd said: “This comes with the territory to them, that’s real money, and I like the YouTubers.
“The money on the back end though, from pay-per-view, that takes a while.
“Nothing comes right away. I’m still collecting cheques from fights seven or eight years ago.

BOXER Edgar Berlanga is set for a hefty $10,000 fine and a six-month ban after biting Alexis Angulo.The Brooklyn-based star, 25, attempted the chomp during his super middleweight showdown against Angulo at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Although his attempted bite failed to make proper contact on his opponents ear, Berlanga’s actions drew criticism from across the boxing world.
Promoter Lou DiBella wrote on Twitter: “If you bite your opponent like you’re a rabid dog you should be disqualified.”

CONOR McGREGOR showed off his explosive punching power as he continues to train for his UFC return. The Irishman has been in gearing up for his comeback ever since undergoing successful surgery on the broken leg he suffered last year.

And up until a recent video, which saw him kicking for the first time since the horror injury, most of McGregor’s training has been boxing.
In a new clip, he showed off his famed left hand with thudding counter punches as well as sharp right hooks.
McGregor, 33, captioned the post: “Call these Enders.”
The former two-weight UFC champion appears to be on holiday having posed on a yacht and enjoying warm weather training.
