Quebecs independent police watchdog said the Montreal police tactical unit was at a motel at about 7am for a search linked to the investigation into three homicides in Montreal and Laval in the past two days.
The watchdog said officers were confronted by a suspect with a firearm.
Shots were fired and the man was struck by at least one bullet and pronounced dead at the scene.
The police operation comes after a pair of killings about 65 minutes apart and just a few miles from each other on Tuesday evening in two Montreal boroughs.

Police said they could not rule out the victims were chosen at random.
And one of the men killed was identified as Andre Fernand Lemieux, 64, the father of Canadian middleweight boxer David Lemieux.
Another victim was Mohamed Salah Belhaj, 48, an intervention officer at a local mental health hospital.
The 33-year-old Lemieux, a former IBF middleweight title holder, confirmed the news by uploading a post on his Instagram with a picture of his father accompanied by the caption “R.I.P. dad.”

He went on to explain to Le Journal de Montreal: “To learn that your father died by being shot while waiting for the bus is quite a shock. Everyone in the family is shaken.”
Police found the body of Lemieux’s father around 9:45 p.m. near a park in the St-Laurent borough of Quebec where he was declared dead at the scene after reportedly being shot at least once in the upper body.
Cops killed alleged suspect 26-year-old Abdulla Shaikh, who appears to have suffered from mental health issues and is believed to have chosen his victims at random, two days after his alleged attack began.
Lemieux (43-5, 36 KOs) claimed the IBF middleweight title in 2015 via a unanimous decision over Hassan N’Dam.
He has also come up short in other championship bouts against Gennadiy Golovkin and Billy Joe Saunders.

And when British boxing legend Amir Khan visited the gym, the undefeated 2012 Olympic gold winner revealed he has been waking up at the crack of dawn to squeeze in three punishing sessions a day.

Before his 2020 points win over Derek Chisora, he claimed his ideal weight would be 16st.
But for that London clash he could only reach 15st 7lb.
When he dominated AJ at Tottenham’s stadium, he had managed to hit 15st 11lb of pure muscle and retain his speed, while his rival was 17st.
But now he looks well in excess of his dream weight — which could mean Joshua is in for an even rougher night.

CONOR BENN says he has put his welterweight world title mission on hold to settle the family feud with Chris Eubank Jr.The 25-year-old has climbed the 147lb rankings expertly with trainer Tony Sims but is risking it all to meet the middleweight at a 157lb middleground.

The October 8 clash at London’s O2 will come 29 years since their fathers Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr clashed in their second bout that finished in a magnificent draw.
Conor roared: “This fight is for the legacy and was an opportunity I felt I couldn’t pass up.
“My team and I had other options on the table as I’m currently ranked top five with all governing bodies at welterweight and no doubt I’m looking for a world championship fight very soon.
“But this fight is embedded with so much history and I know it’s one the public really want to see.

“And now I can’t wait for the world to be able to watch us make that happen.

Here is the lowdown on the bitter British rivals ahead of their London clash
“Neither will give up until the last bell rings. I won’t be looking to take this to the score cards though, this will be explosive from the off. I’m so up for this.”
Eubank Jr, 32, has failed to land a major world title at super-middle or the 160lbs middleweight limit.
Mexican money machine Canelo has never shown any interest in a bout and Eubank Jr walked away from a Gennady Golovkin fight in 2016.
Even with a strict rehydration clause in place, Eubank Jr will come in the taller and heavier man.
And he cannot afford to lose against his smaller and less experienced rival.
“I grew up watching their legendary battles and always wanting to emulate that, and find my own arch nemesis”, Eubank Jr Said.
“Could this now be Conor Benn? We will find out.
“He has walked the same path as I have. I know his struggle.
“Living in the shadow of a legend and trying to break out of that shadow and make his own name.

‘What are we, crazy?’ – Tyson Fury’s promoter Bob Arum reveals why he is NOT leading talks for Derek Chisora trilogy

BOB ARUM has confirmed he is not leading talks for Tyson Fury’s trilogy bout with Derek Chisora. Fury claimed he was ending retirement – after four months – to fight Chisora for a third time, despite his 2011 and 2014 wins.

According to ESPN, the fight is targeted for December in Wales, where Anthony Joshua has twice headlined.
And it is claimed Goldstar Promotions – the company that handles Fury’s meet-and-greets across the UK – are behind the offer.
That is despite Hall of Fame pair Frank Warren and Arum leading the WBC champion’s career in recent years.
Arum has spoken out to say he is not involved in the talks and poured cold water on the fight entirely.

He told Fight Freaks Unite: “Of course not. Nothing. What are we, crazy?
“Everybody is waiting for the fight to happen a week from Saturday and then we’ll explore whether it’s feasible to do a fight for the complete unification.
“He’s having fun, for Christ sake! Don’t take it seriously!”

And Fury, 33, has been linked with challenging the winner in what would be a historic, first-ever four-belt heavyweight unification.
And Arum insisted if Fury is to make a return to the ring, it will be against either Usyk or AJ, not 38-year-old Chisora.
He said: “The truth is that he gets up in the morning and he figures how he can best stir up s*** and that’s what he does.
“You think Isaac takes it seriously? Of course not, for Christ sake. (Fury) is just having fun. It’s his idea of fun.
“He’s getting a little antsy as we all are because we’re waiting.
“If Usyk wins then there’s one path to take because then everybody is close and friendly and if Joshua wins then we’ve got to deal with (Joshua promoter) Eddie (Hearn) and all that stuff.”
