‘It isn’t if, it’s just when’ – Deontay Wilder says Anthony Joshua fight MUST happen ahead of American’s boxing return

ANTHONY JOSHUA can still revisit his Deontay Wilder rivalry even though the heavyweight pair are now beltless. After 32-year-old AJ gobbled up the WBA, IBF  and WBO belts his team spent six months haggling with the former WBC king but could never get an undisputed deal done.

The Watford icon eventually beaten by Andy Ruiz Jr before Wilder lost two magnificent clashes with Tyson Fury.
Bad blood between the two power punchers remains as both teams blame the other for blowing the mega-money deal that should have happened in 2018.
The 36-year-old – who claims AJ turned down around £40m ($50m) at the time to fight him – told The Good Fight: “Me and Joshua should have fought years ago, I could have been the undisputed champion.
“The chance isn’t gone, we are both still in the business of fighting so that opportunity will always be there.

“People still always stop me and ask when I’m fighting Joshua. Some people still think that’s the biggest fight in the world, between us two.
“It is the No1 match-up that people still always ask me about.
“It’s not a matter of ‘if’ the fight happens. It’s a matter of when, we just need the tight timing.”
Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn always insisted Team Wilder’s offer for a US showdown was not legit.

And he soured any working relationship with childish name calling of Wilder’s veteran manager Shelly Finkel.
The Bronze Bomber will entertain the AJ battle again but they will not get caught up in Hearn’s tricks.
“We will not fall in line with Eddie Hearn’s games?” Wilder said. “They drained us.
“We dealt with Eddie Hearn for around six months and they just gave us the round around.
“They have their story, which they tell everyone, but I know the facts and he is a big manipulator.”

Mayweather, 45, is undefeated in three exhibitions with his most recent victory coming against Mikuru Asakura at the end of last month.
The 50-0 champion also has experience fighting a YouTuber after drawing with Logan Paul in a June 2021 non-scored exhibition.
Deji, by contrast, is venturing into new territory by taking on arguably the greatest boxer of all time.
The 25-year-old has just one professional fight on his record, a win against YouTuber Yousef Erakat, aka Fousey.

But he has lost all three of his exhibition fights to date including one against Logan’s brother Jake Paul, who is keen on fighting Conor McGregor.
Despite that, Deji’s boxing coach Daley Perales believes he has a chance after “spotting holes” in Mayweather’s game.
He said: “Deji’s got better feet, better movement [than Asakura]. So a very smart game plan is needed.
“You have to be very cute how you go about things and I’ve seen holes in his game because, yeah, he’s getting older now.

“Against that Japanese guy on the weekend he got hit with a big right hook that sent his head back, a jab that snapped him back and he looked a bit uncomfortable on the ropes.”
Deji faces a gargantuan task against The Money, who boasts 15 world titles and an undefeated record.
He has made more than £900m in the ring, while Deji instead spent years making Youtube videos – amassing a small fortune of around £4.5m.
Physically there is not much to separate the two fighters although Deji is heavier than Mayweather and an inch taller.
The American is 20 years older than Deji but boasts a better reach and has only been knocked down once in his entire career.
Deji is a huge underdog but will be determined to prove himself with Mayweather even unsure of his opponent’s name even after the fight was agreed.

Mayweather confirmed the bout saying: “I got one with the guy Deji – I want to make sure that his name is right – Deji, right?
“Yes, Deji. We will be doing an exhibition in Dubai at the Coca-Cola Arena and that is in November.” More

Fury beat Del Boy in 2011 and 2014 but believes he is still one of the toughest opponents he could face.
But the Brit refused to confirm it is Chisora he will face in Cardiff on December 3.
Fury told Secondsout: “In my opinion Chisora at least got a draw with Oleksandr Usyk, so I see Chisora as every bit as dangerous as Usyk – if it is Chisora.
“I thought Chisora deserved a draw at minimum. Chisora is no pushover. If you’re not on your A-game, Derek will beat you.

“There’s a few southpaws that I’m looking at, which would obviously help.”
Usyk beat Chisora in convincing fashion in 2020 via unanimous decision.
The judges scored the bout 115-113, 115-113, and 117-111 in the Ukranian’s favour, with Usyk going on to beat Anthony Joshua twice.
Unlike Chisora, who boasts an 33-12 record with three defeats in his last four bouts, Usyk is unbeaten.

Chisora has also lost twice to Dillian Whyte in 2016 and 2018 – another fighter Fury beat easily this year in front of a record crowd at Wembley.
Fury hopes to face Chisora after their summer of feuding, which involved slinging insults at one another after a proposed fight fell through.
Speaking about the potential match-up, Fury said: “After his latest antics, I hope it is him.
“Unfortunately for him, if he signs a contract I’m going to have to severely smash his teeth in. We’ll see.”
Fury’s promoter Warren has said since that a deal for the Chisora fight was looking increasingly likely.

As Serrano FaceTimed Paul after the fight, TNT hijacked the call to speak to his rival.

It was so bad for the 2019 Love Island star he had to storm out of the room.

Deontay Wilder returning to boxing for undisputed title… but defeat in comeback fight would be ‘devastating’

DEONTAY WILDER comes back to boxing motivated by the undisputed title… but has been warned defeat in his return would be devastating. The former WBC champion faces ex-sparring partner Robert Helenius over the weekend in New York.

It will be his first fight since a gruelling 11th-round knockout loss to Tyson Fury in their epic trilogy bout 12 months ago.
What followed was a period of radio silence from Wilder, 36, who made around £40m for his trilogy series with Fury, 34, alone.
The American took time away on vacation with his wife and kids, while frequently running and meditating.
But Wilder made the decision to continue his boxing career, with eyes on the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO prizes.

His manager Shelly Finkel told SunSport: “He believes he can win the four belts and be the unified champion.
“That is a goal that he would like to do. Why does Tom Brady at 45 subject himself to a gruelling football season?
“Or any other athlete even older who believes they can do it or wants to prove something.”
A win for Wilder over ex-sparring partner Helenius, 38, puts him in line for a WBC final eliminator bout against Andy Ruiz Jr, 33.

Meanwhile, unified champ Oleksandr Usyk, 35, also called out the Bronze Bomber as Fury entered talks with Anthony Joshua, 32.
But the speculative super-fights mean nothing if Wilder cannot get past Finnish veteran Helenius in Brooklyn.
Finkel said: “I don’t even want to think about it, but it would be very devastating, obviously.
“There’s so many things swirling around out there, so it’s not even clear what would be next until he finishes this fight.
“At one point, Fury was going to fight Joshua and Usyk said that he would fight Deontay.
“There’s always the possibility of Joshua, and Ruiz and on and on.
“So rather than get yourself mentally focussed on that, you need to focus on what’s in front of you.”

Tyson Fury vs Derek Chisora 3: Date, UK start time, live stream, TV channel and undercard – what we know so far

TYSON FURY is returning to the ring to take part in another trilogy bout – this time against fellow Brit Derek Chisora. The Gypsy King hasn’t been in the ring since his sixth-round TKO destruction of Dillian Whyte back in April at a sold out Wembley Stadium.

Tyson Fury stopped Derek Chisora in the 10th-round of their 2014 clash
A whopping 94,000 fans, a British record, filled the England football team’s national stadium that night to watch Fury defend his WBC heavyweight crown before announcing his retirement in the ring after.
His retirement didn’t last long, however, as toward the end of the summer he called out Anthony Joshua for a massive money-spinning clash.
Talks failed to materialise, however, and now Fury is on the precipice of finalising a deal to fight Chisora, who beat Kubrat Pulev in exciting fashion in July.
Chisora has clashed with Fury twice before, though, losing the first on points before being stopped in their 2014 sequel.
When is Fury vs Chisora 3?

Fury is set to fight old rival Chisora on Saturday, December 3.
The fight was originally scheduled to to take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff Wales.
But promoter Frank Warren says the event may take place at another arena or stadium in the country now.
Ring-walks will likely get underway from 10pm UK time.

What channel will it be on and can it be live streamed?

The bout has yet to be confirmed, so there is no TV channel yet.
But Fury’s last eight fights have be shown live on BT Sport, with his last three all being shown as a pay-per-view event.
BT Sport Box Office is available for live streaming from their dedicated app, which can be downloaded onto your mobile or tablet device.

Eubank Jr, son of British ring legend Chris Sr, had claimed in the build-up that the drastic weight cut would deplete him to as little as 60 per cent of his usual all-action self.
And that is why he has stuck the specific number on the cost of kit he will hand out to fans at a Soho gym on Tuesday evening.
The incredible athlete – who showed with a social media video on Saturday that he had stayed within his agonising rehydration clause even with the fight postponed – told SunSport: “We spent a lot of money on merchandise to sell at the arena on Saturday.
“But, after the fight was cancelled and so many people were let down, I feel it’s only right to give it all away to the fans, in person.”

Hundred of fight fans are expected at the Rathbone Boxing Club as the turn of events has won Eubank Jr legions of new fans.
Eubank and Benn both gave statements at their Wednesday media workouts when promoter Eddie Hearn was still desperately trying to get the fight on.
But, after the British Boxing Board of Control refused to sanction the show on Thursday and the entire event was axed, all parties now have to keep their counsel while the complicated process is followed.
The failed test was conducted by VADA, who the BBBofC do not acknowledge as they have UKAD controlling their anti-doping policing and sentencing.

But there is now a chance the two agencies could work together to work out how Benn was found to have traces of female fertility drug Clomifene in his system.
Benn has had the public support of father Nigel, trainer Tony Sims and even Chris Sr who believes his most famous two-fight rival’s son is innocent.
Sr said: “When I look at the fighter I look at the spirit in the man and Conor, in my view, would have no idea about what would have been happening.
“When I look at Conor Benn, that is a pure young man.
