Nottingham Forest vs Man Utd LIVE RESULT: Elanga’s winner and Murillo’s clearance boost Red’s bid for Europe – latest

MANCHESTER UNITED falter again as high-flying Nottingham Forest extend league unbeaten run to four after Anthony Elanga’s early first-half strike. The host would deal the early blow on the 5th minute as the former Red Devils winger burst past a sea of bodies from his own half and into the United box before placing his finish past André Onana. Late substitution-turned-unorthodox-striker Harry Maguire made his presence known in the final minutes and came close to bundling in the equaliser only for Murillo to deny him with a goal-line clearance in the last seconds. Next upThe big games keep coming for both of these sides.Nottingham Forest have tricky games with Aston Villa, Everton and Spurs before their FA Cup semi final with Man City.United have a Manchester derby this weekend and an away trip at Newcastle sandwiched by their Europa League ties with Lyon.Copy linkCopiedMakeshiftHarry Maguire was brought on with a few minutes to go and played through the middle as a centre forward. On that decision, Amorim told BBC 5 Live: “If you look at the game in the final 15 minutes they were defending with six men in the box so we had to get more players in there. “We cannot get inside the box with the combinations.”Harry Maguire is really strong on set pieces and when you are in the opposite box you are a striker not a defender. “He is maybe the best guy to play inside the box.”Copy linkCopiedSpeedAnthony Elanga scored a wondergoal against former club Manchester United as fans hailed it the “goal of the season” – but left viewers divided with his celebration. The Nottingham Forest star, 22, scored what proved to be the winner within five minutes thanks to an outrageous solo effort. As the Midlanders cleared their lines from a corner, Elanga picked the ball up in his own half. The Swedish international weaved his way through three Man Utd defenders and kept going all the way into United’s box.He covered an incredible 85 metres in just nine seconds hitting around 21mph, keeping near-Olympic 100m pace, to catch United on their heels.Copy linkCopiedMatch reportMan Utd old boy Anthony Elanga zapped his former employers with a lightning goal and edged Forest a step closer to the Champions League.United boss Ruben Amorim noted before the game how Old Trafford exiles Marcus Rashford and Antony were currently thriving on loan. But it was another former Red Devils wideman who scored the early, only goal in a game in which the visitors did everything but score.TNT Sports claimed Elanga, who joined Forest in the summer of 2023, had run 85 metres in nine seconds before slotting past Andre Onana in the fifth minute. If that is true, perhaps he is in the wrong sport.Copy linkCopiedChampions League football coming?Nuno replied: “Let’s focus on the next one. It is day-by-day.”Copy linkCopiedOn beating United againHe is the first manager since Brian Clough to do the double over Man Utd as Forest boss. But Nuno said: “The records, the boys are breaking all of them and today the City Ground was part of the game. “We were against the ropes. The City ground helps us.”Copy linkCopiedNuno on the winHe told TNT Sports: “We had to suffer, hard work, believe, helping each other, clearance on the line. It was a very hard game for us.””Anthony Elanga is a special boy and he gives this team his speed. He does it by himself and we are delighted.”Copy linkCopiedMain manEverything United do is through Bruno Fernandes. And it’s quite incredible the amount of times he manages to find himself in possession, particularly with Ryan Yates following his every move tonight. It’s a pity those round about him aren’t on his wavelength.Copy linkCopiedHe concluded”We helped them to win three points. I see progress in the game. “Everyone can say whatever they want to say, I see things but we need to win.”We go to the next match. We have Europa League and the next Premier League game.”Copy linkCopiedMore from RubenHe added: “We had a lot of shots and pushed them to the final third but in the end, we had a lack of quality in the final third.”We need to win games. We deserve more from this game, that is clear, but it is our fault. “We cannot concede in the transition of set pieces. We should have won this game, not even draw, but in the end we lost three points.”You know the characteristics of the team. One goal puts them in the place they love. We have to score to win the game, it is frustrating.”Copy linkCopiedThe numbers back that upAs Ruben Amorim said, they were rubbish in front of goal.It was just about record-breaking rubbish, too.Backed up by this X post from OptaJoe, who said: “Manchester United had 24 shots v Nottingham Forest, their most in a Premier League game in which they failed to score since September 2021 against Aston Villa (28), and their joint-most on record (from 2003-04) in an away game without scoring in the competition. Wayward.”Copy linkCopiedRuben frustrationRuben Amorim bemoaned his side’s lack of cutting edge and said his side shouldn’t have lost OR drawn the game – but should’ve won.He told TNT Sports: “We controlled the game but we already knew this team can score out of nothing.”When they score, it changes the game for what they want. We tried and had good opportunities.”In the final third, the last pass was not there. We don’t have that and we cannot score goals. This season is like that.”Copy linkCopiedPraise for the bossElanga concluded: “We have one of the lowest possession in the league, but it has been effective and it is something we have worked on since pre-season. Murillo’s block means more than a goal, seeing it on the bench I was like ‘Wow’.”It started in pre-season, the manager came in December last season and when he came we struggled.”He got his ideas across and we have been able to play different systems. Every player can play any position. That togetherness is important and it says it on the pitch.”Copy linkCopiedCalm finishAnd the finish at the end of that long, mazy run is something that has come from hard work.Elanga added: “The finish was something I’ve worked on. You can run fast but you need to remain calm.”Coming here was about playing, I’m not the finished product. I learnt a lot at Man United. I appreciate them a lot. “I am enjoying my football and want to keep going.”Copy linkCopied’Attack the space’ICYMI – Anthony Elanga was recorded as running 85 metres in just nine seconds for his goal.Asked about that pace and dribbling power, Elanga told TNT Sports: “It’s about attacking the space and getting to the edge of the box as quick as I can, that’s where you can hurt the opposition. “I saw the space and I back that I can show it on the pitch. It’s not too shabby!”Copy linkCopiedMore from OptaOpta Analyst give Nottingham Forest an 81.8& chance of finishing in the top four now.And with fifth set to get Champions League football too, they’d finish in the top five in 93.3% of simulations.Pretty much guaranteed then…Copy linkCopiedConstantly chasingAn incredible stat from OptaJoe here as United continue to concede first and give themselves a mountain to climb. On X, they’ve posted: “23 – In all competitions this season, only Leicester City (25) have conceded the opening goal in more matches among all Premier League sides than Manchester United (23). Premier League announce major change to VAR to be introduced for last seven games of the season

PREM chiefs will finally roll out semi-automated offside technology for the final seven rounds of top flight games, starting on April 12.Club bosses approved the introduction of the new system last summer, with a planned launch in the autumn.A major VAR change is heading to the Premier League imminentlyCredit: ReutersSemi-automated offsides are coming into play later this monthCredit: PREMIER LEAGUEUS-based Genius Sport devised the specialist cameras – up to 28 per match – which deploy the “mesh tracking” of 10,000 plus data points for each player. But a series of issues and concerns about the accuracy of the system saw the launch date put back. While it was used for the first time at seven of the eight FA Cup fifth round ties, an eight minute delay before Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez’ “goal” against Wolves was eventually ruled out brought a cautious response from Prem leaders. All clubs had been warned that even with SAOT there will still be some situations – such as the one at Bournemouth – where crosshairs and lines will have to be used rather than simply taking the computer call and illustrating it with virtual animation.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLBut last weekend’s quarter final games in the Cup passed off without any concerns. And Premier League bosses confirmed the decision, arguing: “The technology maintains the integrity of the VAR process while enhancing the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making.”Prem chief football officer Tony Scholes is convinced that SAOT will speed up decision-making on offsides, cutting 30 seconds-plus off the time taken.Ongoing technical developments backed by Fifa should also see the swift end of assistants keeping their flags down on “tight” offsides, with automatic signalling if a player has broken the defensive line by more than a few inches. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERSThe first match to experience it will be Man City’s Etihad clash against Crystal Palace on April 12.A full statement read: “The Premier League will introduce semi-automated offside technology on Saturday 12 April (Match Round 32). However, the forward, who scored the Lionesses’ tournament-winning goal at Wembley three years ago is not looking too far ahead. Kelly adds: “I don’t think about it too much. I take each day as it comes and work hard to put myself in the best possible place for the next day.”That’s really important and I don’t look too far ahead in anything. “I’m just having fun at the minute, enjoying myself and back down in London with my family spending a lot of time with them. “I’m really appreciating the little things in life.”The first of England’s two Nations League duels with Belgium could see Kelly feature alongside Russo and forward Mead this Friday. The reverse fixture will take place in Leuven on Tuesday April 6The trio were last in action together on March 30 against Crystal Palace in the WSL, with Mead netting twice and Russo also scoring in the 4-0 Arsenal victory. Kelly said: “Growing that connection is really important and the connection off the pitch as well as on it.””By pushing myself every day I can learn what Alessia is doing and how I can match that to be at my best to help her score and Beth as well. “She’s a great friend of mine – Beth.England hope to beat Belgium home and away and stay undefeated in the Nations League as they continue preparations for this year’s Euros in SwitzerlandCredit: Getty”When you have that competition it allows you to be at your best every day.Read More on The Sun”And you can push each other in moments as well so that’s really important.”There’s so much we can learn from each other.” More

Is Bruno Fernandes really the only viable Manchester United player ahead of back-to-back double Gameweeks?

MANCHESTER UNITED have been a one-man team for much of the season. This description is certainly fair in the realm of Dream Team, where Bruno Fernandes (£7m) is 125 points ahead of his closest team-mate.Fernandes has excelled despite Man United’s troublesCredit: ReutersThe Portugal international has been on a roll of late having amassed 101 points from his last seven outings! As a result, Fernandes has become the game’s leading midfielder by a wide margin with only superstar forwards Mohamed Salah (£7.7m) and Erling Haaland (£7.8m) above him in the overall rankings.Any Dream Team manager worth their salt would have recognised the 30 year-old playmaker as an excellent option and he’s currently the third-most selected asset in his position.Fernandes seems well placed to deliver further returns in the coming weeks. The Red Devils travel to Nottingham Forest this evening and will then be one of just five teams to fulfil four fixtures across Gameweeks 30 and 31: Manchester City (h), Lyon (a), Newcastle (a), Lyon (h).Fernandes is head and shoulders above his team-mates right nowCredit: GettyIt’s not a favourable set of games by any means but the fact Ruben Amorim’s side remain active in Europe means they have more point-scoring opportunities than the vast majority of teams this month. And so the question must be asked: is Fernandes really the only viable Man United player at this moment in time? The next-best performer in the squad is Alejandro Garnacho (£3.4m) with 220 points to his name. Most read in FootballAll things considered, that’s a good return from the Argentine winger, one that puts him 12th among midfielders at the time of writing. However, the 20-year-old can be a frustrating asset to own at times.Garnacho blows hot and cold but is certainly capable of providing pointsCredit: GettyGarnacho ranks first in his position for shots on target but just 14th for goals, evidence of inefficiency in front of goal.In terms of playmaking, the opposite is true as he ranks joint-fourth for assists among midfielders but just joint-35th for big chances created, suggesting his team-mates really have made the most of his relatively limited creative output.Garnacho is a curious player for sure, one who occasionally leaves points unclaimed, but it’s simply a fact that he returned 32 points in four appearances just prior to the international break. This fruitful run featured a goal and three assists.Fernandes is undoubtedly the best attack-minded option in Man United’s ranks but doubling up is a viable strategy for the next two Gameweeks at least and Garnacho seems to be best accomplice for such an approach.Dalot has earned 188 pointsCredit: PAIt may surprise some Dream Team bosses to learn that Diogo Dalot (£3.4m) is among the top ten defenders in the game.Despite Man United’s problems as a collective this season, the Portuguese wing-back has contributed seven goal involvements on top of ten clean sheets – he ranks highly for tackles too.Not as highly as Noussair Mazraoui (£3.2m) though, who has racked up 131 tackles in all competitions – the highest tally among all players. The Morocco international is just three points shy of Dalot overall.Only David Raya and Emi Martinez have more points among goalkeepers this seasonCredit: AFPThen there’s Andre Onana (£3.4m), who ranks third among goalkeepers despite the fact he’s conceded a whopping 52 goals in all competitions this season. The former Inter custodian has made 107 saves, a total only bettered by Mark Flekken (£3.4m) and Emi Martinez (£3.9m).Read More on The SunIt’s understandable if gaffers feel reluctant to back Man United’s defensive assets with Man City, Lyon (x2) and Newcastle in the diary but the Stats Centre suggest Dalot, Mazraoui and Onana are worthy of consideration.Things might get really interesting if Fernandes and company progress to last four of the Europa League, especially if the other English clubs still active in Europe are eliminated at the quarter-final stage.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOW More
