‘I knew that when I started boxing’ – Delicious Orie ready to step up as Britain’s next heavyweight star

DELICIOUS ORIE entered boxing ready to exploit a heavyweight gap in the market.Born in Moscow to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, Orie’s family moved to England when he was seven years old. Delicious Orie prepares to turn professionalHe was beaten in the 2024 Olympics by Armenia’s Davit ChaloyanCredit: PABut he only picked up boxing at 18 – having previously played basketball – but what followed was a hugely successful amateur career. Orie won a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships as well as national titles before making it onto Team GB’s 2024 Olympic squad. He was eliminated in the first round of the Paris Games under controversial circumstances and has since turned professional. Orie snubbed an offer from WWE to sign with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren – debuting in Manchester on Saturday. Down to earth Orie, 27, told SunSport: “I knew that when I started boxing, I did my market research. “I knew that when I started boxing, I knew that there was a missing target audience that I can appeal to.”I believe that I’m quite real and I could appeal to just normal people and I can also try and inspire as many people that were or still are in my position. Most read in BoxingCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS”So I thought to myself, there’s definitely a gap in that market for me. So from before I even thought about turning professional, I knew that.”Orie was tipped to follow in AJ’s steps and win Olympic gold – but he was beaten via controversial decision against Armenia’s Davit Chaloyan. David Adeleye and Jeamie TKV forced apart in explosive row ahead of Joe Joyce undercard fight And he reflected: “The thing that makes it harder is the fact that I’ll never be able to do it again. That’s the part that’s difficult.”Not necessarily the fact that everyone thought I won it. At the end of the day I lost and a judge – someone said you lost – it is what it is.”But it’s the fact that I can’t do it again. I could do it in a different way but it’s not the Olympics. So that, that’s the hardest bit for me to take.”Orie took some time out after his Olympic heartache, travelling to Thailand with his partner. He got a shock offer to trial at the WWE – but ultimately chose boxing after some consideration. Orie said: “First of all, it was time for me to be a bit less selfish and spend time with my family because I know I was away from them for a good few months leading up to the Olympics and also the tournaments and stuff beforehand and the training camps, etc.”So I just needed to give as much time as I can to them. Then it was the WWE seeing what’s that’s like in America and exploring that option. There’ll be people gathering together watching Delecious Orie box, whether they don’t like me or like me, doesn’t matter. They’ll be watching.”And after that, I just needed a few weeks just to really find what my drive is and what is it that I want out of this life.”So that took a few good few weeks and then it was a good few weeks of negotiations and just speaking with different promoters and stuff like that.”So it got us to around this time where I’m like, right OK, cool, I’m ready now. “I know exactly what I need. I’ve got my training facility, I’ve got my promoter. I’m ready to go.”Orie is being coached by Grant Smith in Sheffield and makes his debut on the undercard of Joe Joyce vs Filip Hrgovic. He faces 3-7 Milos Veletic from Bosnia And Herzegovina in what Orie promises will be the first of many eye-catching performances in 2025.Read More on The SunOrie said: “I’ll be very, very busy. ‘Beyond ridiculous’ – Tommy Fury slammed for rejecting ‘multiple offers’ from Jake Paul and faces losing out on rematch

TOMMY FURY has been slammed for turning down “multiple offers” to rematch Jake Paul – and faces losing out on the fight forever.Fury, 25, beat Paul, 28, via split-decision in 2023 and became the first and so far only man to hand the YouTuber-turned-boxer a loss.Jake Paul was beaten by Tommy Fury in 2023Credit: GettyTalk of a rematch has ensued ever since but Paul’s team claim Fury rejected a $6million (£4.5m) offer to do it on Netflix last year. The money could have risen to $8m (£6m) but now Fury risks forfeiting the mega-money fight all together. Paul’s promotional partner Nakisa Bidarian told SunSport: “Tommy was offered an unbelievable deal to headline versus Jake on Netflix and they had a false sense of expectations.”Jake’s not gonna ever offer him that kind of money again. Now if Tommy Fury showed up and said, ‘Jake, here is $20million to fight me and I’m gonna make $20million.’ Right, all the power to you.READ MORE IN BOXING”But they’ve never made an offer once. And we’ve made multiple offers to try to make that rematch happen.  “And if you’re very confident that you’re gonna be Jake Paul, you should have jumped at the opportunity to fight him for $6million plus upside on Netflix.”It’s just beyond ridiculous that they didn’t.”Paul has won five times since the points loss in Saudi Arabia – most recently against Mike Tyson. Most read in BoxingCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSTyson accepted the fight – in place of Fury – under controversial terms due to his age. He was 58 by the time he lost an eight-round decision to Paul – but still over 100 MILLION tuned in to watch on Netflix. Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul is ‘five times’ bigger than Tyson Fury boutFury meanwhile has fought just once since victory over Paul – beating the American’s arch rival KSI, 31, via disputed decision in October 2023.He underwent hand surgery afterwards and pulled out of his scheduled return in January after ex-UFC star Darren Till threatened to KICK him in the ring. Fury has always maintained he spent 2024 out injured nursing his busted hand – suffering a secret battle with depression while doing so. But Bidarian revealed that was not Fury’s reasoning for rejecting their offers to rematch Paul. He said: “That was never mentioned. They were turning it down because they wanted a lot more money.”The only place where Tommy Fury can make anything close to the numbers that Jake Paul offers Tommy Fury is to fight, KSI again.”That’s just being transparent and if that’s what he chooses to do, good for him, that’s not boxing, that’s, that’s a different form of the sport, as you know.Read More on The Sun”It’s not truly viewed as professional boxing but if that’s what he chooses to do, 100 per cent we understand.”But Jake’s at a point where he doesn’t need Tommy Fury to have his career continue to rise.
