England were set to face Italy and Denmark at the end of the month, but both games have been suspended.

It has also been confirmed this week that Euro 2020 has been postponed until next summer.

Southgate, 49, has reached out to fans and urged everyone to “work together” to stop the spread of the virus.

In an inspirational open letter to fans, he said: “In the way you’ve all come together to support our team, we must now work together to combat a virus that is causing physical and emotional issues to many.”

The former Middlesbrough man claimed “the responsibility lies with us all” as he insisted England will beat the bug.

He said: “Look out for each other. Please don’t suffer alone, and remember that our great country has come through these enormous challenges before – and, together, we will do so again.

“We were due to play next week and to represent you all this summer, but now is clearly the moment for us to take centre-stage.

“The heroes will be the men and women who continue working tirelessly in our hospitals and medical centres to look after our friends and families.”

After Southgate’s message did the rounds on Twitter, fans called for him to take charge of the entire country.

One said: “SOUTHGATE FOR PRIME MINISTER!!!”

Another added: “From the reassuring, inspiring words, I presume this man is the prime minister?”

And one fan simply tweeted “Southgate for PM!” as another praised “totally classy” approach.
