Formula E’s Rome race the latest sporting event to be postponed due to coronavirus outbreak

FORMULA E’s Rome E-Prix has become the latest sporting event to be postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The race was scheduled for April 4th but organisers have taken the necessary precautions to help stop the spread of the deadly virus.

Italy has been the worst affected nation in Europe and England’s Six Nations match, plus the Rome marathon, have also been cancelled.

A statement said: “As a consequence of the ongoing health emergency in Italy and according to the provisions set out in the ministerial decree concerning measures to counteract and contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country — which includes sporting events with large crowds and spectators in close proximity — it will no longer be possible to stage the Rome E-Prix on April 4, 2020.

“Formula E, in agreement with the relevant authorities in Rome, EUR S.p.A and together with the FIA and Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI), will work closely with championship partners and stakeholders in order to assess and review alternative options to postpone the Rome E-Prix to a later date once restrictions have been lifted.

“All ticket holders will be contacted through the appropriate channels in the coming days.”

This is the second FE event to be stopped after the Sanya E-Prix in China was also postponed.

There are now doubts about future races in Seoul, South Korea, on May 3 and in Jakarta, in Indonesia, on June 6th.

Meanwhile, the F1 season opener in Melbourne on March 15th is going ahead as planned.

There has also been radio silence from F1 regarding the races in Bahrain and Vietnam, despite the travel complications caused by the virus.
