‘Moronic’ Rangers fans slammed for chanting ‘The Pope’s got Corona[virus], I hope he f***ing dies’ after Braga win

THIS is the moment Rangers fans chanted “The Pope’s got Corona[virus], I hope he f***ing dies”.

The sick chant came after the Gers players’ heroics in Braga – beating the Portuguese side 1-0 – and 4-2 on aggregate.

A large group of fans are seen gathered in the street as they celebrated the huge win.

But some yobs decided to sing the vile lyrics wishing for Pope Francis’ death.

Scotland’s leading anti-sectarianism charity Nil by Mouth have slammed the behaviour of the ‘moronic’ supporters.

Nil by Mouth director Dave Scott said: “What dismal, bigoted, moronic behaviour.

“These people are utterly detached from the 21st century and an embarrassment to the club they claim to be supporting.”

Rangers have been contacted for comment.

It came after the pontiff was forced to cancel a church service yesterday after he was struck down with illness – amid the Coronavirus pandemic which has affected Italy.

Today he had to call off a second day of engagements, with the Vatican saying the 83-year-old saying he had decided not to go ahead with official audiences.

It comes after we showed the shocking moment drunken Rangers fans started singing “we hate Catholics” on a flight to Portugal.

Over 5,000 Gers fans were expected in Braga for Wednesday’s last 32 Europa League showdown.

But dozens of supporters travelling from Manchester to Lisbon have been blasted for the bigoted chants ahead of the game.

In footage recorded on the flight, fans can be heard chanting “We hate Catholics, everybody hates Roman Catholics”.

Others cheer and clap along in the 30-second clip as they touch down at the Portuguese airport.

In another shock video they chant the Follow Follow song including  “Dundee, Hamilton… f*** the pope and the Vatican”.

One passenger, who did not want to be named, said she feared for her safety during the flight because she is Catholic.

The terrified English woman, travelling with her boyfriend, said she even hid her crucifix under her T-shirt so the group wouldn’t see it.

She recorded the chants to highlight the hateful lyrics, but was too scared to film those involved.

Meanwhile, the Light Blues have been handed a tough draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 of the competition.

They have been paired with the German giants who beat Porto home and away in the last round.

Peter Bosz’s side sit fifth in the Bundesliga with 43 points – level with fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach.

Earlier this month they defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-3 at home and stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 win at the Allianz Arena in November.
