Man Utd midfielder Scott McTominay can’t wait to play with Bruno Fernandes as he eyes FA Cup and Europa League trophies

SCOTT McTOMINAY can’t wait to partner Bruno Fernandes in the centre of Manchester United’s midfield – and wants an FA Cup and Europa League double to celebrate his return from injury.

The Scotland star is stepping up his recovery from a knee knock, which has kept him out since Boxing Day.

McTominay is on the Red Devils’ winter break to Marbella and when he returns he would love to have a proper tilt at winning the two competitions the club are still in.

The 23-year-old said: “It would be nice to come back and have a massive, massive push with the rest of the boys to get into some finals, get some trophies under our belts and really set the bar for next season, set a bar that we don’t step underneath.

“All of the boys are fully focused on doing that and hopefully we can do it as well.”

United face Derby in the FA Cup fifth round and Club Brugge in the Europa League last-32 over the coming weeks, while they will look to get their top-four bid back on track against Chelsea after the winter break.

McTominay is eager to get playing alongside £55million new boy Fernandes, who has impressed in his short time at Old Trafford.

He said: “In the brief moments that I have seen him in training, he has looked really, really good.

“He has looked like every type of player that the manager wants as well, so hopefully that can come to us on the pitch and he can show us what he can do. I can’t wait to play alongside him.”

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expected McTominay to be out until early March but the midfielder is ahead of schedule.

McTominay said of his recovery: “It has been going well.

“Obviously, it is never nice watching football matches when you have been playing, you want to be involved and you want to be helping the team as well.

“It is difficult, you know, but you have to find your way through it mentally more than physically sometimes. It is challenging, obviously, from my first proper injury.

“You need to have all of the right people around you, which I do, and that has been massively beneficial towards my recovery and obviously I want to be taking some part in the sessions towards the end of the week.

“We will just see where we go from there. So, we are just going to do whatever we can to make sure I am back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
