Instead of pinging the ball upfield from a dead ball, he smashed it straight into team-mates Laurent Abergel’s privates, leaving him curled up on the ground.
The referee sprinted over signalling for treatment, which undoubtedly the player needed.
The clip has been shared on social media – with commentators not showing too much sympathy for the footballer.
One person called it a “groin-killing shot” on Reddit with another added that it was “friendly fire”.
Other used various “ouch” memes when the clip was uploaded onto Twitter.
Things didn’t get any better for Fontaine or his stricken team-mate – their team fell to a 2-1 away loss to Guingamp.
The loss ended a run of four straight wins for Lorient who had gone to the top of the division.
They were relegated to the second tier in France at the end of the 2016/17 season after losing a play-off against Troyes.
It meant their 11-year stay in the top flight was ended.
