The fans’ favourite suffered bouts of paralysis where his arms and legs were unresponsive and wrestled with the idea of retiring after suffering spinal concussions.

But, close to his Conisborough home at the Sheffield Arena, Allen made his long-awaited return with a third round stoppage of the journeyman.

The emotional ace said: “This means the world to me, I’ve waited for this moment for a long time.

“I’ve come back because I love the game. Whatever I have is because of boxing.”

The 27-year-old had promised to enjoy himself on his return to the ring, after almost having his career cut cruelly short, and he did not disappoint.

And the gay icon – who found fame after stuffing socks down his pants for a photo – spent the opening session switching stances, dropping his guard and dancing about like a man half of his size.

The second had the feel of an exhibition bout but the thousands of fans inside arena still sang their hero’s name as he cruised through the motions.

Allen was only patting and slapping Darch but he was clearly taking pleasure from being able to slip and slide his punches with his gloves down by his waist.

Allen definitely wanted to finish the fight at the halfway point of the six rounder, he raced out of his corner for the third and a left hook dropped Darch.

The gatekeeper, with losses to Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois on his record, was suddenly well out of his depth and another flurry sent him to the deck.

Darch sat up and looked capable of beating the count but instead he made a cut-throat gesture, laid back and stretched out to end his shift.
