Video: The Perfect Set

France captain Benjamin Toniutti sets the ball during the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 6, 2020 – Where would any team be without a good set? It is a crucial part of any attacking play, and without it, or a top-class setter, no team would be able to unleash their attacking players to win points.

A set can be fast or it can be done in a more controlled manner, but the one thing it needs to be is precise. The setter needs to put the ball in the right place and at the right time to allow the attacking player to benefit to the maximum.

In this video, the FIVB catches up with some of the greatest setters in world volleyball – men who can put the ball as high or low, as fast or slow, and in exactly the right spot for an attacker to swoop on to finish a move.

France’s Benjamin Toniutti, USA’s Micah Christenson, Iran’s Mir Saeid Marouflakrani and Italy’s Simone Giannelli explain how they go about working with the team, and ensuring that their attacking players have plentiful opportunities to score points.

You can also watch them in action to see what it takes to be a world class setter.
