27 African countries advance in Continental Cup action

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 29, 2020 – With the FIVB World Tour in the midst of a two-week break before resuming competition in Cambodia, qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continues as the field for the African men’s and women’s Continental Cup sub zonal phase for the second round of the competition has been set.
The 20 men’s and 20 women’s teams representing 27 nations will be divided into four pools of five countries each with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the finals to be played in June at a site to be determined.
A total of 13 countries will have both genders competing in the sub zonal Continental Cup action, including Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan and Zambia.
Seven countries will be sending men’s teams to the sub zonal Continental Cup rounds, including Botswana, Congo Brazzaville, Mail, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo and Tunisia.
Seven nations have advanced women’s pairs to the sub zonal Continental Cup playoffs, including Cape Verde, Congo DR, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Morocco, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
From the middle of February until the end of March, the second round of the CAVB Continental Cup will be contested for both men and women with eight countries advancing to the finals of the Continental Cup to be held in the week of June 21st.
The winning countries from the men’s and women’s Continental Cup finals in June will advance teams to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The FIVB World Tour resumes the first full week of February with the first women’s event of the 2020 calendar year set for February 6-9 at Siem Reap followed by the next men’s FIVB tournament from February 20-23 at Phnom Penh. The two events mark the third-straight season that Cambodia has hosted FIVB World Tour gatherings.
The two Cambodian events are the only February tournaments on the 2019-2020 FIVB World Tour calendar. March’s schedule features four double gender events (Malaysia in Langkawi from March 12-15; Australia in Coolangatta from March 18-22; and Mexico at Cancun from March 25-29), two men’s stops in Iran (March 3-7 at Bandar Abbas) and Qatar (March 12-15 at Doha) and a women’s tournament in Guam (March 5-8).
