Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs in £25m transfer battle for Emre Can but face dilemma over Juventus flop’s £260k-a-week wages

ARSENAL, Manchester United and Tottenham are part of a FIVE-way battle for Juventus midfielder Emre Can, according to reports.

The German, 26, moved from Liverpool to the Italian giants in 2018 but has struggled for form and minutes – not helped by needing thyroid surgery months after joining.

He was left out of the Maurizio Sarri derby as Juventus lost 2-1 to Napoli on Sunday – officially with flu – as Blaise Matuidi, Miralem Pjanic and Rodrigo Bentancur started in midfield.

Adrien Rabiot came off the bench but Aaron Ramsey was an unused substitute.

And now Can is being linked with a return to either the Premier League or the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and former-club Bayern Munich also interested.

Can joined Juventus for free and is under contract until 2022 but it is understood his club would be willing to sell for around £25million.

According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund are at the front of the queue to land the midfielder.

But regardless of where he ends up, Can is likely to need to take a significant pay cut if he does leave Turin.

WAGE WAR

He is on a reported £260,000 per week which could off potential suitors, with Dortmund willing to pay him £160,000 a week instead.

Out of the three Premier League sides, Manchester United are the most in need of another midfielder with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay injured and Nemanja Matic now 31 and out of contract in the summer.

Mikel Arteta is getting plenty out of Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira while Matteo Guendouzi also offers another option in a holding midfield role at Arsenal.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, is without Moussa Sissoko, looks set to sell Victor Wanyama and has publicly criticised record-signing Tanguy Ndombele.

Can came through the youth ranks at Bayern Munich but made just seven first-team appearances before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 and Liverpool a year later.

And Munich manager Hansi Flick is well aware of what Can could add to his side.

He said: “As long as the transfer window is open, a lot can still happen.

“I was there at the Under-20 European Championships in Israel in 2013, so I was able to get an idea of him. He is a top professional with a top career.

“He just has the quality to play for every club in the Bundesliga. He is a leader and is good for every team.”
