Marcos Maidana needs to slim down to 11st after 36-year-old announces boxing return following five-and-a-half years out

BOXING veteran Marcos Maidana has vowed to lose the pounds and make a sensational return to the ring this year.

The 36-year-old hung up his gloves after his loss to Floyd Mayweather back in 2014.

Maidana, who has a 35-5 record, planned a comeback last year but ultimately pulled out having failed to come through a gruelling training programme.

But now he’s ready to make amends with an exhibition clash against kick boxing champ Jorge Cali on April 18 in Buenos Aires.

According to boxing news 24, the Argentine will then look to land a blockbuster bout with the stunning prospect of a fight against Canelo Alvarez.

Maidana will need to trim down to 154 pounds (11st) during his training camp – a tough ask after seemingly enjoying his retirement.

It is unclear on what weight he is now but pictures on his Instagram show he will seriously need to cut back on life in the fast lane to reach his target.

Speaking to ESPN.mx, he said: “I’m going to take the “Steel” Cali as a fight, not as an exhibition, so we’re ready.

“We are going to see what weight we can give and we are going to see the rivals.

“I have never chosen rivals, [and] I will not do it now, whatever.

“We will see how we are doing on April 18 and then Chino Maidana Promotions will give me the options.”

Maidana is a two-weight class world champ having held the WBA super lightweight title and the WBA welterweight title.

He beat American Adrien Broner in 2013 to claim the welterweight belt before facing Mayweather twice.

On both occasions, he went the whole 12 rounds with the undefeated American but lost on the judges decisions.

His bank balance became the real winner and unsurprisingly he has been enjoying the benefits ever since.
