Scans confirmed that the 22-year-old has suffered a stress fracture in his back which could force Solskjaer to make his move in the transfer market.

When quizzed on how long Rashford will be on the treatment table for, the Norweigian boss told Sky Sports: “Rashford? It’s a stress fracture that happened against Wolves.

“It’s not happened before, it happened there and then.

“He’ll be out for a while. He won’t be back until after the mid-season break.

“Normally six weeks to heal, but I’m not a doctor, and then he needs rehab after that probably.”

Solskjaer also hinted that he could take advantage of the January transfer market to bring someone in as a short-term solution.

He added: “We’ve had many injuries for big players this season. It’s just an unfortunate situation we’re in.

“We might look at some short term deals as well that could take us through to the summer.

“We don’t desperately need a striker, if the right one is there and it fits for us… we’ve got players who are champing at the bit.”

Rashford has been spotted carrying a bone healing device that involves an ultrasound being delivered to the afflicted area to speed up recovery.

He was first seen with it before last Saturday’s win over Norwich first sparking fears that he had an ongoing issue.

Solskjaer later admitted that it was a mistake risking him against Wolves that saw him leave the field in agony.

Rashford had started every one of United’s games this season, scoring 14 goals along the way.

United have already missed out on Borussia Dortmund hotshot Erling Haaland but may turn their attentions to Juventus veteran Mario Mandzukic.
