Cavani, 32, is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to pen a new deal at Paris Saint-Germain.
But despite this month being the last opportunity to cash in on the Uruguayan, the French club are still demanding big money to let him leave.
The mega-rich French champions have slapped a £26million price-tag on his head with a host of European clubs monitoring his situation.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United remain in the market but don’t want to stump up so much cash when he is available for nothing in six months’ time.
The report adds that Cavani considers a move to Old Trafford a ‘possibility’, giving the club encouragement a deal could be done in the summer.
Atletico Madrid still remain favourites to secure his signature and could even sign him before the transfer window shuts this month if they can convince PSG to cash in.
Cavani is thought to favour a move to Spain over the Premier League with Chelsea and Spurs also linked.
Discussions between Atletico and PSG started in Paris as early as January 2 and it is clear both Atletico and Cavani want this deal to materialise.
In an attempt to speed up the process, Cavani is reportedly refusing to travel with the team until his situation is resolved.
PSG remain reluctant to cash in on their all-time record scorer and know his experience could prove vital in the Champions League.
