Young, 34, sensationally stormed out of training last Friday in a bid to push through his exit at the club.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left with little option but to cash in on the defender after he refused to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer confirmed the deal was the best for both parties.

He told United’s official website: “Well, to be fair, I think it was for Ashley, you know.

“He is 35 in the summer and, if he gets a two-year contract somewhere, I think it’s up to him to take that. We weren’t ready to offer that.

“He’s been a good servant for the club. He’s been captain and he’s won trophies, leagues, cups, but we’ve got players coming through.

“So it was time now, then. When Ashley’s head and mindset was on ‘yeah, I want to try this’, why not do it now?”

Young, who admitted it was his first time in Milan, has spent just under nine years at United and lifted four major pieces of silverware including the league title in 2013.

But he has been a bit-part player this season following the emergence of Brandon Williams having started ten league matches.

Young, who has been capped 39 times by England, will complete his medical on Friday afternoon before reuniting with former United players Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

His move to expected to be officially announced on Friday evening with Inter two points adrift of Juventus at the top of Serie A.

Young made 261 appearances for United, and scored 19 goals.
