Chelsea face transfer battle with old boss Mourinho for PSG striker Edinson Cavani with Spurs desperate for firepower

CHELSEA may have to fight off old boss Jose Mourinho to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani with Tottenham desperate to bolster their forward options.

Harry Kane’s injury has led to reports in El Pais Uruguay that Portuguese manager Mourinho will look to secure Cavani’s arrival in this January transfer window.

The Uruguayan front man could be the ideal replacement for crocked England captain Kane who had surgery on a ruptured tendon in his hamstring last week.

Kane suffered the injury on New Year’s Day against Southampton and is targeting a return to action in April.

However, Mourinho fears he may not be back until next season and could even miss the chance to lead England in Euro 2020 this summer.

Mourinho has publicly complained about his lack of striking options since Kane’s injury and seems desperate to bring in a No9 to fit his style of play.

Cavani, 32, has scored an incredible 198 goals in 291 games for PSG and could be the perfect replacement for the talismanic Kane in North London.

The PSG hitman has attracted lots of Premier League interest with Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea and Manchester United linked with his signature.

Chelsea are in the market to strengthen their resources up front with 2018 World Cup winner Olivier Giroud likely to leave Stamford Bridge and join Inter Milan before the end of the window.

Ex-Napoli man Cavani could be the ideal striker to challenge Tammy Abraham for a starting spot with Blues boss Frank Lampard preferring to start with only one centre-forward.

United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward was spotted on the Eurostar to Paris fuelling speculation he may be trying to engineer a deal to bring Cavani to Old Trafford.

Cavani’s contract runs out in the summer and it was thought Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal to bring him to LaLiga on a free transfer at the end of the season.

However, Atletico are now said to be trying to fast forward the move to January amid interest from other clubs.

They may have to create space on their wage bill to afford the deal with Frenchman Thomas Lemar potentially being offloaded.
