Tranmere vs Watford postponed due to heavy rainfall as Storm Brendan creates havoc on FA Cup fixtures

WATFORD’S FA Cup trip to Tranmere on Tuesday night has been postponed.

The third round replay was called off shortly after lunchtime due to a waterlogged pitch caused by heavy rain in the area.

Both Sunday and Monday saw downpours hammer the Prenton Park pitch that were not set to relent until shortly before the match.

Much of northern England, Scotland and Ireland was hit by constant rain and strong winds by Storm Brendan.

With the game in doubt since the storm began, League One side Tranmere covered their pitch on Monday night.

Match officials arrived at lunchtime and an inspection led to the replay being postponed.

The club wrote online: “We appreciate the difficulty this may pose for supporters, but the [inspection] timing has been determined to give the fixture every chance possible of taking place tonight.

“We must add that the ground staff have worked tirelessly, working all hours, over the past few days in an attempt to get the game on but were unfortunately beaten by the weather.”

The Hornets were on course to cruise into the next round before surrendering a three-goal lead in the latter stages of their initial meeting at Vicarage Road.

An announcement on the rescheduling of the match is expected in due course with next midweek ruled out due to a league fixture in the book for Watford.

Therefore it could even be played on the weekend of January 25, the same day the fourth round will take place.

That means a highly likely delay for either Wolves or Manchester United – as the winner are set to face the winner of the Tranmere-Watford tie.

And with both of those sides still in the Europa League, a fixture pile-up could soon ensue.
