Aberdeen’s ex-Man City and Premier League star Shay Logan reveals he’s been training as a plumber for when he quits game

ABERDEEN’S former Manchester City ace Shay Logan has revealed that he has been secretly training to become a plumber.

Logan, 31, says he doesn’t earn enough cash from footie to be set up for life so is planning for when he hangs up his boots.

The Dons defender, who has also played for Brentford, Tranmere, Scunthorpe and Grimsby, said: “We earn good money. But at this level are we really going to earn money that will last us a long time, for life? No.

“I always said to myself that when I get to a certain age I want to start doing something else. I love football but I don’t love it enough to go into coaching and stuff like that.

“I thought you know what, I’m going to do a trade. It was either go into gas, electrician or plumbing. Plumbing and gas come together, it’s the same course.

“I learn from home, I go in to do my tests and stuff like that and speak to the tutors when I need to.

“But it’s all home learning and I’ve got a friend who’s a plumber so I do my practical stuff with him.”

The Englishman, who made his Premier League debut for City in 2009, goes on the tools after training and on his days off.

Speaking on BBC’s Football Focus at Aberdeen training ground he said: “So I’m out virtually every day after training.

“When I finish here at one o’clock I’ll go there until five o’clock.

“On my days off on a Wednesday I’ll do a full day. I’ve been doing that for about 18 months now.

“So that’s my aim for after football. It’s a million miles away from football.

“I go into that and I love it because no matter what happened on the Saturday, whether we’ve won, lost, drawn, I go into the unknown.

“When we go to training we know what we’re doing. The stuff is virtually the same, you’re doing possession and going into games.

“But when you go into plumbing it’s totally different. It’s something I’ve never come across. It’s new to me.”

And Logan told how his fully-trained plumber pal loves to order him about.

He said: “I’m actually an apprentice. I’ve got a friend who absolutely abuses me.

“In the real world it’s not like that but when I’m in his realm it’s like, ‘You need to go and get this, go pick up this from the van’.

“I had my hands in my pants all week and he was like, ‘Get your hands out your pants’.

“I’m a 31 year old man and he’s just told me to take my hands out my pants. He’s the boss.

“It’s something totally new and away from football. It takes your mind off things.”

Logan signed for the Premiership side in 2014 and has made over 200 appearances.
