Southampton 1 Tottenham 0: Ings’ solo effort seals win as Kane hobbles off with hamstring injury & VAR cancels out goal

THINGS went from bad to worse for Jose Mourinho after Danny Ings opened the scoring at St Mary’s in what was to prove the match winner.

Harry Kane hobbled off the pitch after appearing to pull his hamstring – before his goal was ruled out by VAR.

Spurs were unable to find their way back into the game after Ings latched on to a long pass from Jack Stephens.

The 27-year-old lifted the ball over the head of Toby Alderweireld before he fired his strike past Paulo Gazzaniga and into the net.

Jan Vertonghen missed Tottenham’s best chance of the first half from close range before Southampton were denied a penalty after the break.

Ryan Bertrand’s cross appeared to strike Alderweireld’s arm in the box – but VAR confirmed it was not intentional.

As Spurs relentlessly pushed for an equaliser, England international Kane saw a goal ruled out by VAR.

After he knocked the ball into the net, the skipper instantly clutched his hamstring before he signalled for Mourinho to take him off.

Shane Long came close to doubling Southampton’s tally with five minutes left to play, but his header went wide of the woodwork.

Mourinho’s side would have temporarily moved above Manchester United in the table with a win – but will remain in sixth for now.

And the club could be without their star striker for the FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough on Sunday and next Saturday’s showdown with league leaders Liverpool.

To make matters worse Mourinho was booked for spying on the Saints’ bench.
