Jose Antonio Reyes’ son, 12, wins MVP award after helping Real Madrid win La Liga Promises and says dad ‘would be happy’


JOSE ANTONIO REYES’ son scored four goals and scooped the MVP award to help Real Madrid win the final of the La Liga Promises international tournament.

Six months after his father lost his life in a car accident in his homeland in June, the 12-year-old featured in a match between two of his former clubs.

And in a touching tribute paid to the former Los Blancos star before Sunday’s final, Reyes Jr. was presented with a Sevilla shirt bearing his late father’s number.

The young striker was the star of the show as Madrid’s under 13s came back from 2-0 down to beat Sevilla 5-3 in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Jose Antonio Reyes Lopez scored nine goals in total to claim both the Golden Boot and the player of the tournament in the La Liga Promises competition.

Speaking after the match, via ESPN, he said: “My father would be very happy, and would have told me that’s the way to do it.

“He would have told me to continue like this, that I’m on the right path.

“If I had to choose between the three [titles] I would keep the Liga Promises Cup because it’s something all the team fought for and it’s something to remember.”

Spanish international Jose Antonio Reyes,who was part of Arsenal’s Invincibles side that went unbeaten in the 2003-04 Premier League season, died aged 35 near Seville on June 1.

At the time of his death an agreement was already in place for his eldest son, Jose Antonio Reyes Lopez, to join Madrid’s academy from Leganes.

Los Blancos president Florentino Perez quickly revealed that the Spanish giants would do all they could to look out for the rising star.

As reported by Marca, Spanish football journalist Cristobal Soria revealed: “Perez was sensational, incredible.

“It’s an incredible detail that he said instead look after the son of 11 years.

” Perez told me that I’d look out for him until his 18th birthday and that he wouldn’t have to worry about anything.”
