Man City legend Vincent Kompany urges former club to tie Pep Guardiola down to a new contract

VINCENT KOMPANY has urged Manchester City to tie Pep Guardiola down to a new contract.

Guardiola’s current deal runs out at the end of next season with doubts growing as to whether he will stay past that.

Former club captain Kompany, now player manager at Anderlecht, has been tipped to return to The Etihad in the future to take charge.

But speaking to Sky Sports Kompany said: “I am not thinking about that.

“My ambition is right now to be successful with a project and deliver that successfully.

“If I was in a deciding position at City now, I would do everything I can to keep Pep for as long as I can. He is truly the best.

‘LUDICROUS SPECULATION’

“To say anyone will ever come near, it is speculating in a ludicrous way.”

Guardiola insists he will still be here next season and open to staying longer.

But despite back-to-back titles he says expectations have now risen at the club and he will have to deserve that new deal.

Guardiola said: “We’ve been here four seasons and it will be five because I’m trying to stay here next season too.

“To sign a contract you have to see how it works and if I deserve it.

“We’ve increased our levels a lot and the expectations are higher.

“We’ll see if we can handle it. It’s not just my desire.

“Now we have a little break with the family over Christmas and we have time to think about the future.”

City travel to face Wolves on Friday and Guardiola says that Sergio Aguero is still not fit enough to start after recovering from a thigh injury.

He came on for the final minute of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Leicester.
