Anthony Joshua trainer slams Andy Ruiz for blaming loss on being overweight as he brands trilogy fight ‘pointless’

ANTHONY JOSHUA’S trainer Angel Fernandez has slammed Andy Ruiz Jr and thinks there is “no point” in a trilogy fight.

Back on December 7 Joshua exacted the perfect revenge with a masterful performance to outpoint the out-of-shape Mexican.

Six months earlier he was the victim of one of boxing’s biggest ever shocks when Ruiz Jr floored him four time, secured a seventh-round KO and snatched four heavyweight world titles.

But for the rematch Ruiz Jr came in at over 20st and admitted afterwards that “three months of partying” had cost him any chance of a repeat.

He was also keen to complete a trilogy fight, insisting that he would come back “stronger and better”.

But Fernandez was not impressed with Ruiz Jr’s excuses, and has batted away any chance of Part III.

Speaking to World Boxing News, he said: “When Joshua lost in New York, he took it like a man.

“One of the first things that he said was, listen tonight it’s about the man. He won the titles so give the credit and attention to him.

“The first thing Ruiz said after was, ‘oh I’ve been partying. I shouldn’t have been doing that. I should have been doing this’.

“Maybe Ruiz is saying this is to make the third fight happen – I don’t know. Maybe he was thinking the public would go and say let’s see the third fight.

“For me, I don’t see a point of a third fight. Joshua has proved he’s been too much for him.

“In the second fight, for him to come up with that type of excuse, I don’t think he should have said that.

“He (Ruiz) kind of took some of the glamour from the performance by Joshua on the night.”

AJ is set to face mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev next.

A successful defence of his titles should hopefully see him try to set up what the whole boxing world wants – a undisputed fight against either Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder.

Those two of course have their own rematch on February 22 in the US.
