English football is in mourning as Martin Peters has passed away aged 76.

The Three Lions legend helped England to their only ever World Cup triumph in 1966, famously netting in their 4-2 final win over Germany.

What was Martin Peters’ cause of death?

Martin Peters had been fighting a three-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease after being diagnosed in 2016.

A statement from the Peters family on the West Ham website said the following: “It is with profound sadness that we announce that Martin passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4.00am this morning.

“A beloved husband, dad and grandad, and a kind, gentle and private man, we are devastated by his loss but so very proud of all that he achieved and comforted by the many happy memories we shared.

“We will be making no further comment and kindly ask that the privacy of our family is respected at this extremely difficult time.”

Which football teams did Martin Peters play for?

Like many in England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad, Martin Peters made his name at West Ham.

Having made his debut in 1959, Peters spent an incredible eleven years at the club, and helped them to the 1965 Cup Winners’ Cup.

After making 302 appearances and scoring 81 goals he joining Spurs in 1970.

At Tottenham, he would play 189 times and score 46 goals. becoming an integral part of Bill Nicholson’s side which won the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and the Uefa Cup in 1972.

In 1975, he moved to Norwich at the age of 31 and went on to make 206 appearances and score 44 goals, being named the Canaries’ Player of the Season in both 1976 and 1977.

He would spend his final season in league football with Sheffield United in 1980/81.
