Axed Unai Emery backs ‘prepared’ Mikel Arteta to turn around struggling Arsenal

UNAI EMERY reckons Arsenal made a “good decision” appointing Mikel Arteta as his successor.

The Gunners confirmed former star Arteta as their new boss on a three-and-a-half year deal, ending his spell as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

Emery was sacked last month following a terrible run of results – but appears to be supportive of the decision to hire the inexperienced Arteta.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Emery said: “He really is prepared to make that next jump.

“He has been at Arsenal before, he’s been in the Premier League and he has been working with Pep Guardiola.

“I do believe this is a good decision and I would also like it to be a good decision.”

Emery has been linked with the vacant Everton job, but it appears Carlo Ancelotti is set to be appointed boss at Goodison park.

Discussing the speculation, he said: “Now is the time to go home.

“To be with my people, to analyse a lot.

“I’ll spend the next few days close to my family, with my coaches.

“I’ve started doing a lot of soul searching.

“We all spoke to each other and questioned what we got wrong.

“There’s been interest from teams but I want to just spend some quiet time and choose the right project.”

Arteta will be hoping to make a fast impact in a bid to save their season and push for the top four.

One win in 10 league matches has left them 10th, seven points behind Chelsea in fourth.
