Speaking to the BBC, Rapinoe said: ‘There was lots of talk about arrogance, celebrating too much, but this is what you want.

‘These are the goals you want and this team is giving it to you – it’s defiance but it’s cheeky.

“I feel like we’re going to have fun. We have a very serious role to play so it is kind of a balance of that.

‘We have always done this – we have done cartwheels, sang into microphones, made snow angels when we played in the snow.

‘The next level trolling with the tea [by Alex Morgan] is so funny; it’s so funny because you English are so uptight sometimes. It was just so perfect, you know?’

Morgan celebrated by pretending to drink a cuppa after heading home what proved to be the winner in July’s semi-final against the Lionesses.

One person who was particularly angered was Piers Morgan, who called to ‘make those cocky yanks choke on it’.

He also called the celebration a ‘declaration of war’.

USA star Alex Morgan defended her celebration at the time saying: “I feel that there is some sort of double standard for females in sports to feel like we have to be humble in our successes and have to celebrate, but not too much.

“You see men celebrating all around the world in big tournaments, grabbing their sacks or whatever it is, and when I look at sipping a cup of tea, I’m a little taken aback.’

Morgan’s comment was referring to Diego Simeone’s cojone grabbing celebration, after Atletico Madrid beat Juventus in last season’s Champions League.

Megan Rapinoe was crowned winner of the Ballon d’Or for her performances on the pitch during the World Cup, as well as her actions off it.

She has publicly stood up to racism, homophobia and sexism.

Rapinoe also won the Golden Boot at this summer’s World Cup, finishing with six goals.

In her Ballon d’Or acceptance speech she said: ‘On the one hand, I am a very good footballer.

On the other hand, my action off the field attracts support because people understand that I’m trying to find solutions to the problems of society.’
