The 50-year-old cheered on the Blues at Stamford Bridge as goals from Tammy Abraham and Cesar Azpilicueta were enough to see Chelsea through to the knockout stages as Group H runners-up.

Speaking to reporters pitchside after the game, McConaughey revealed that the Londoners are one of the most followed teams in Hollywood.

He said: “I don’t know who the most popular (team in Hollywood) would be.

“I know Chelsea are up there because there are a lot of people in my business from England that I’m friends with that are Chelsea fans in Hollywood. Quite a few. In Texas, all over the States.”

McConaughey, an Oscar winner for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, was announced this year as one of the investors in burgeoning MLS outfit Austin FC, who will officially join the American league in 2021.

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud recently revealed he is weighing up a move to the US once he leaves England, and American star McConaughey confirmed he is “looking for players”.

Speaking of his love of football, the True Detective star added: “I’ve been to an Arsenal game. The McConaughey clan, actually my heritage, rested in Liverpool on their way through so we follow it.

“I’ve got children at home, 11, nine, six, who are big footballers.

“My job takes me all over the world…what’s the one game you can find anywhere in the world? Football. The soccer ball is the greatest invitation in the world so they’ve got me back into it.

“I played for 12 years as a kid, but it was mainly my kids that have got me back into it, so we’ve got a local team now in Austin, Texas – Austin FC, will be playing in 2021 and I’m part owner.

“We just got our GM, we just broke ground, we’ve got a stadium coming up, we’ll have 22,000 and we’ll start looking for players now, so soccer’s coming to Austin Texas.”

McConaughey later shared snaps of his visit to Stamford Bridge on Twitter, with the caption: “18 players, 14 countries, one game. God bless ‘the soccer ball: the greatest invitation in the world.’”

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger later added his own post, saying: “Thanks for your visit @McConaughey I hope you’ve enjoyed yesterday’s stadium visit, #butitsfootballnotsoccer.”

The Blues are now expected to be handed a tough round of 16 draw against the likes of Barcelona, PSG, and Bayern Munich are finishing runners-up.
