United move to fifth after the 2-1 derby win – just five points off Chelsea who occupy the final Champions League spot.
Rashford said: “We blew them away today and we could have had more goals and seen the game out but it was a tough win and sometimes they do more for you as a team.
“We will enjoy this and it will help us.
“We had a lot of chances. The challenge for us now is in these games is to finish those and do that for 90 minutes then we can be a lot more ruthless.
“We have to take positives and work on negatives.
“I was unlucky with a lot of chances. We could have gone in 3 or 4-0 up and the game is finished. That’s what we can work on.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s struggling United took a deserved lead on 23 minutes at the Etihad after Rashord converted from the spot.
Just six minutes later Frenchman Anthony Martial capped off a well worked move to smash the Reds 2-0 up.
The centre-back Nicolas Otamendi pulled one back for the champions – but their late push for an equaliser came to nothing as United’s inspired defence held out.
