Frank Lampard admits Chelsea ‘not good enough’ after Everton hammering

FRANK LAMPARD has blasted Chelsea as “not good enough” after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Everton.

The Blues suffered a third loss in four games as goals from Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin handed victory to Duncan Ferguson on his debut as interim boss.

Chelsea dominated possession at Goodison Park but were extremely poor defensively while also allowing Everton to control every aerial battle.

Richarlison put the Toffees in front after five minutes when he beat Andreas Christensen for a header.

Calvert-Lewin doubled Everton’s lead early in the second half, but his strike was quickly pegged back by a wonder hit from Mateo Kovacic.

However, it was Calvert-Lewin who had the last laugh when he pounced on an awful mistake from goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to seal all three points.

It wasn’t just Chelsea’s defence at fault, with the midfielders and forwards fluffing numerous opportunities by taking too many touches.

Lampard believes his team need to be more clinical in front of goal, and need to bounce back with a win against Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday.

He told the BBC: “We knew they were going to have a go, they’ve got good players. They’re in a slightly false position for whatever reason.

“I’m more worried about us. It’s not good enough from us, conceding three terrible goals from our point of view.

“We know Richarlison’s good in the air on crosses. He gets one early in the game and the last thing you want to do here is go one down because that gives them the game that they want.

“They can be very organised and make it difficult for you. We didn’t do enough because we got in their box so many times and not getting our shots away, trying to walk it in at times. So, lots of things I wasn’t happy with.

“Sometimes [it was frustrating] because we have to get our shots away, particularly against a team that has a lot of bodies around the box.

“You beat one, you’ve got to beat another and another, so you need to get your shots away.

“We did have a fair few shots because we had domination of the ball but at the same time we’ve got to do a lot more.

“It’s the story of our season to a big degree, we’re not taking enough chances.

“[The third goal was] annoying because at that point you’re pushing to try and get a draw, there’s only one team trying to do that and we gifted them a goal.

“It’s important [to bounce back next week], I’m flat and disappointed, not because of the defeats before but because of today.

“We come here, we know what the rules are, we know they’re a team with a new manager who are going to fight for everything and we should get a result and that shows we’ve got a way to go.”
