Man City target Leicester ace Soyuncu ‘as Kompany replacement’ as Pep looks to transfer market to plug leaky defence

MANCHESTER CITY are targeting Leicester star Caglar Soyuncu to help plug their poor defence, according to reports.

City were flimsy at the back again in their latest 2-2 draw at Newcastle and blew the lead twice at St James’ Park.

According to the Sunday Times, there are plans afoot to “reshape” the City squad, as the club acknowledge the void left by former captain Vincent Kompany.

David Silva, 33, is another player Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain are looking to replace long-term.

Despite Newcastle being the joint-second lowest scorers in the league, the back two of Stones and Fernandinho, with Walker on the right and Mendy on the left, looked vulnerable with almost every attack.

With Aymeric Laporte likely injured for most of the rest of the season, City have been all at sea in defence.

Pep Guardiola would clearly prefer to play Fernandinho in midfield and he has even looked their best ball-winning defender, despite it not even being his best position.

Leicester made one of the signings of the summer in 2018 after landing £19million Soyuncu from Freiburg.

His partnership with Jonny Evans has been brilliant this season and the Foxes have barely felt the departure of £85m Harry Maguire to Manchester United.

But many Foxes fans been dazzled by how the Turkey international, 23, has stepped up during his second season in the Premier League, with his ball-winning abilities standing out.

Leicester are currently level on points with City in third place, and even have an identical goal difference.

Their eight goals conceded this season — compared to City’s 16 — is the best in the top flight by some distance.

Without Fernandinho, City might have conceded many more against Newcastle with their defence looking shockingly rusty
