But the former Argentina defender has backed his tenure, despite failing to win a trophy or the Champions League final.

And fired a warning that he is sure he will meet Spurs again — probably in an opponent’s dugout.

In a statement through the League Manager’s Association, Pochettino has spoken for the first time since his sacking.

He said: “I would like to thank Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy for giving me the opportunity to be part of Tottenham Hotspur’s history.

“I would like to thank also everyone I met at Tottenham, all the club staff and the football players during these 5½ years.

“Finally, I would like to give a special mention to the fans who make this club so great with their fantastic support.

“I gave the best of me to accomplish the objectives I was asked for in our first meeting.

“There were equally tough challenges as exciting success.

“Best wishes for the future, I am sure we will cross paths again.”

Pochettino’s son Maurizio still plays for the North London club and played in their 1-0 Uefa Youth League win over Olympiakos.

He also still has a flag adorning one of the walls inside the new Tottenham Stadium.

Manchester United have been hotly tipped as the club who could hire Pochettino next, if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to struggle getting results.
