Jose Mourinho lines up Schalke keeper Alexander Nubel as he eyes Hugo Lloris successor at Tottenham

JOSE MOURINHO has his eyes on Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel as the newly appointed Tottenham manager targets a successor for current shot stopper Hugo Lloris, it’s been claimed.

Despite conceding 15 goals in 12 Bundesliga matches and keeping just three clean sheets, Nubel has still managed to impress, being named captain of his current club.

And it comes at the perfect time for Mourinho who is keeping close tabs on Nubel as the 23-year-old only has 12 months left on his current contract.

Schalke, who sit 5th in the table, offered Nubel a new contract in the summer, but so far he has not put pen to paper.

European football expert Kevin Hatchard told talkSPORT: “One little whisper that came my way on Spurs in the last few days is that they are keeping an eye on Alexander Nubel.”

That interest could lead to France goalkeeper Lloris becoming one of the first casualties of the Mourinho era.

The 32-year-old was struggling for form and then picked up a serious elbow injury for which he underwent surgery at the start of this month.

He injured the elbow and sustained ligament damage during the Premier League game against Brighton last month.

It means the veteran has not yet had a chance to show the new Spurs boss what he can do.

On top of that, the almost 10 year age gap between Lloris and Nubel could be seen as another reason for Mourinho to switch things up for his North London side.

Speaking on the young shot-stopper, Hatchard told talkSPORT: ”He is the captain of Schalke and a goalkeeper in his early 20s. He is a very good goalkeeper with a [Manuel] Neuer vibe about him”.
