Sergio Aguero ruled out of Manchester derby through injury with City striker set for ‘a few weeks’ on the sidelines

MANCHESTER CITY have confirmed Sergio Aguero is likely to miss the Manchester derby on December 7 with a groin injury.

The Argentina forward limped out of the 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday and had tests on the injury yesterday.

And Pep Guardiola says he will miss the next few games – including the clash with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men at the Etihad.

Guardiola said: “He will be out a few weeks. Exactly how long, I don’t know.

“I don’t think he’ll be ready for the derby, maybe we’ll have a miracle but I don’t think so.”

Aguero joins Aymeric Laporte, Leroy Sane and Oleksandr Zinchenko on the treatment table at the Etihad.

And Guardiola said: “Of course it’s the toughest period coming now, there’s a lot of games in November, December and January.

“I’d prefer to have everyone but my advice is not to think too much, don’t think about the massage room and see which players are there.

“We have enough good players, enough quality to give us extra and maybe it will help us. It’s what it is.

“Don’t think too much and let’s get the Champions League done until February.”

Guardiola will give Gabriel Jesus an extended run in the team – starting against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League tomorrow night.

City need just a point to clinch top spot in their group but any slip would leave them with work to do in their final game in Zagreb next month.

Even if the United game was the last one Aguero was to miss, the goal machine would still be absent for City’s Premier League trips to Newcastle and Burnley beforehand.

And if he cannot recover before Christmas, he would also miss City’s trip to Arsenal on December 15 and the huge top-of-the-table clash with Leicester City at the Etihad on December 21.

Upon hearing the news, fans online reacted in varied fashion.

One posted: “You hate to see it but he will score on December 7.”

And another added: “Another £100m spent on a striker in January then.”
