He said: “We’re here, it’s been a while but the gloves are off now – we have got to do our best.

“Porsche’s decision to join FE was made a while ago.

“FE is going from strength to strength and there’s a lot of key manufacturers.

“We have a lot of special people and a lot of great engineers and racing is still clearly in Porsche’s DNA.”

Beyond the fiercely competitive pit lane, Webber is excited to see the drivers fight it out in the all-electric series.

He added: “I’m a driver, so I love the drivers as well as the teams, so I am keeping a keen eye there.

“The drivers are being paid to do a good job in this championship, because the manufacturers know it’s very competitive.

“They need the best drivers to get the job done, so that’s an underlying factor.

“The manufacturers are here, they mean business and they want the best drivers.”
