Three Australian stars banned from Olympics after woman makes complaint over ‘unprofessional conduct’ on Cambodia tour

FOUR Australia stars have been banned from representing their country following an incident involving a woman on tour of Cambodia.

The quartet of under-23 players have all received long-term suspensions – which means three will no longer be able to compete in the Olympics next year.

Lachlan Wales, Nathaniel Atkinson and Brandon Wilson have all been barred from taking part in Tokyo 2020 as a result of their punishment.

The side’s captain Riley McGree will still be available for the Games should Australia qualify – but he has been banned until April 1.

Their bans come at the end of a lengthy investigation by the Football Federation Australia

The suspensions cover all Australia national teams, including the senior squad.

McGree had been in contention for a senior call-up after starting the season well with Adelaide United.

It means Australia now have a weakened squad who will compete in the AFC under-23 championship in January, which doubles up as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics.

McGree will be available if they qualify but the remaining three have been suspended until August 10.

“These sanctions are commensurate to the nature of the breaches of the National Code of Conduct which is in place to safeguard both the players and the reputation of Australian football,” FFA chairman Chris Nikou said in a statement.

“Upholding our commitment to respect and responsibility cannot be compromised. Our game is built on equality, inclusivity and respect and these are values that we will continue to uphold.

“The players have understood the gravity of their actions and have positively commenced respectful relationship programs that will ensure they appreciate these values in the future.”
