England boss Southgate on Qatar scouting mission… to beat Germany to best hotel at 2022 World Cup

GARETH SOUTHGATE will jet out to Qatar on a World Cup recce next month — to stop the Germans nicking the best hotel.

The England boss is one step ahead of the four-time world champions and plans to bag the perfect accommodation in 2022.

Southgate, combining the mission with the Club World Cup, said: “We’ve got to have belief in what we’re doing and execute the right preparation.”

He added: “When I started the job we looked at other federations.

“We were almost embarrassed to go and look at where we should be preparing for.

“Germany were always there and they had already secured the best bloody hotel.

“So we have had to be a bit bolder and say, ‘No, look, it’s not a jinx to go and do it’.”

Southgate has some down time after securing Euro 2020 qualification in the past few days and will use it to help the FA prepare for a baking hot World Cup finals two years later.

Next month’s Fifa jamboree is being held at a similar time of year to when the 2022 World Cup will be staged in the tiny Gulf state. England’s head coach added: “I am actually going to go to Qatar to watch some of Liverpool’s games but also it’s exactly the time the World Cup will be played there.

“So, climate will be ideal to get a feel of and we’ll pinpoint a couple of camps that we would stay in when we are there.

“We have to have preparation for all of those things going on, so I’m excited to see what that’s going to look like as well.

“Without taking any focus off what we’re doing next summer, we’ve got to get the next bit right otherwise we’ll be behind the curve.
“And I think the best organisations get that short, mid and long-term planning right.”
