And the Elland Road side are already looking to build a squad that can survive.

Leeds scouts have been tracking the progress of Phillips, who has spent this season on loan at Ipswich from Manchester City.

The ex-England midfielder is likely to leave the Etihad at the end of the season with Ipswich looking doomed to relegation.

Phillips left his boyhood club for City back in 2022 in a £45million deal.

He’s had a nightmare time at the Etihad, playing just 16 times in the Premier League in two seasons before being loaned to West Ham and then the Tractor Boys.

But Phillips remains a firm favourite among fans in Yorkshire, and would be welcomed back to Leeds with open arms.

Phillips’ social media activity would suggest his ties to the club remain strong.

Last week he commented on the form of Leeds’ flying winger Dan James, who is continuing to set the Championship alight.
