Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd (3-5 pens) LIVE RESULT: 10-man United book spot in FA Cup fourth round after superb win on penalties

MANCHESTER UNITED have beaten Arsenal on penalties to book their spot in the FA Cup fourth round.

A first-half with little action saw the Gunners’ injury crisis deepen after Gabriel Jesus was forced off on a stretcher.

The Red Devils came out of the traps fast after the interval, with Bruno Fernandes’ stunning finish giving the visitors the lead.

Minutes later, Diogo Dalot was sent off after he received his second yellow card of the match.

The Gunners took no time to pounce with the man advantage as Gabriel fired the hosts back on level terms on 63 minutes.

Martin Odegaard had the chance to put Arsenal in front from the penalty spot, but Altay Bayindir denied the Norweigan with a superb save.

The FA Cup clash went to extra time and 10-man United survived a Gunners onslaught to take the tie to penalties.

Ruben Amorim’s men secured a 5-3 win in the shootout to progress to the fourth round.

  • Pens conjure memories of 2005

These two clubs have only had one previous FA Cup tie settled by penalties – but that was the final.

The 2005 competition was won by Arsenal on spotkicks after a drab 0-0 draw.

    Who will prevail today?

The kicks will be taken in front of the travelling Manchester United fans, and Bruno Fernandes will go first.

  • From Jordan Davies at the Emirates

The last time Arsenal took part in an FA Cup penalty shoot-out, they went on to win the competition…

It was in 2013/14 when they beat Wigan in the semi-finals before beating Hull City in the final.

  • From Charlie Wyett at the Emirates

I can understand why fans are gutted for Tamworth not getting a replay against Spurs.

But in this instance here, I am glad the result is going to be decided today rather than having a replay at Old Trafford in 10 days

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    120. In a frenzied final 60 seconds, a Partey shot is deflected over.

The Arsenal corner brings hope for the home side, but Gabriel and Trossard are denied, and the game ends with Rice hammering over from 30 yards.

This third round tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    118. A Havertz header…

    …trickles tamely wide of goal.

Has the last chance for Arsenal been and gone?

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    116. Four minutes remaining.

Never mind Ruben Amorim’s back three, it’s a back eight now that Manchester United are operating with.

Both sets of fans are giving it one last go as the atmosphere reaches fever pitch.

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    114. Tierney immediately puts a gem of a cross in from the left, but no Arsenal player takes a chance on it.

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    112. It’s another injury blow for Arsenal.

Jorginho is hobbling his way towards the dugout and he will not be able to continue either. He would have been a certainty to take a penalty.

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    108. Corner FC try their luck with their 10th of the day, but once again the United rearguard defend it admirably.

De Ligt, Martinez – and even the departed Maguire – have been excellent today.

  • Kick-off – Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    106. There’s almost a goal within seconds of the restart in extra-time…

…but not in the end you’re thinking.

After doing so much defending in the first period, United begin the second on the front foot.

ZIrkzee tries his luck with a sidefooter from the edge of the boz, and when it clips off the inside of Partey’s foot it looks destined for the bottom corner.

That is until Raya reacts with a fabulous low dive to claw the ball away from the goalline.

  • Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd

    It’s half-time in extra-time.

Penalties loom at the Emirates, but ten-man Manchester United still have work to do to get there.
