He was appointed to help deliver their huge ambitions – the main one of which was to eventually reach the Premier League.

At the time, Salford were competing in the National League North.

And, two promotions later, they are now members of the English Football League.

The Ammies currently sit 16th in the League Two table.

The defender was loaned out to Bournemouth and Swindon Town before eventually joining Reading in 1998.

But he was forced to retire aged just 26 in 2000 after suffering a career-ending injury.

Casper sustained a double leg fracture following a challenge from Cardiff’s Richard Carpenter.

He later received undisclosed compensation in an out-of-court settlement with Carpenter.
