He has won back-to-back Premier League titles as well as the Champions League and FA Cup, while winning the World Cup and Copa America with Argentina.

Alvarez, 24, played more minutes than most City players last season but has complained about being left out of the biggest games.

He revealed he will take time to consider his future after being knocked out of the Olympics, with Arsenal now on red alert according to The Mirror.

The Gunners are big admirers of Alvarez but may be unwilling to match City’s asking price.

Pep Guardiola has previously stated he would never prevent an unhappy player from leaving, but the Citizens value Alvarez at £80million.

Arsenal were not planning on splashing out on a marquee signing after spending on Riccardo Calafiori and David Raya, but would reportedly make an exception for Alvarez.

And they could fund a move by selling academy graduates Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah, who have been linked to Leicester and Marseille respectively.

Alvarez is also attracting interest from Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid after his cryptic transfer revelation.

He said: “Last season, I was one of the City players with the most minutes on the team.

“But it’s true; in the end, you don’t like being left out of important matches. You want to contribute.
