Gascoigne and Lineker were part of the England side who got knocked out of the 1990 World Cup in the semi-finals by Germany

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker, 63, revealed the event also marked the passing of the late Terry Venables, while 53-year-old Alan Shearer picked up a legacy England cap.

Shearer and Lineker both reminisced about seeing old team-mates and recalling stories.

And the latest episode of the pod revealed that Richards, 35, had not actually been invited to the event, with Lineker joking he had “begged” for an invite.

After a laugh, Richards then revealed he had enjoyed a chat with 56-year-old Gazza.

The former Manchester City defender said: “It (the event) was unbelievable. So Gazza was there, he looks brilliant, he sounds back to his very best. He comes up to me, and first of all he calls me Miguel.”

Lineker then interjected to add: “Mickel he called you.”

Richards continued: “I’m buzzing he even knows who I am but anyway he comes over to me and goes, ‘When I was first watching Match of the Day I thought who the f*** is this?'”

The story saw Lineker and Shearer both erupt into laughter, before Richards added: “And he goes, ‘Then actually I thought to myself, this guy knows his stuff’.
