He has since appeared for the club’s under-18 and under-21 sides as well as training with Erik ten Hag’s first team.

However, he is yet to make his senior United debut or be included in a matchday squad.

Despite that, Scanlon became the first United player to represent Gibraltar’s senior side whilst being at the club on Thursday.

He appeared as a 74th minute substitute in their 1-0 Nations League play-off loss to Lithuania.

Danny Higginbotham previously played for both Gibraltar and United, but his international debut came 13 years after he left Old Trafford.

Scanlon will be hoping to pick up his second cap in the return leg in Vilnius on Tuesday, with the loser relegated to League D for the 2024/25 campaign.

The teenager has previously been capped at under-21 and under-17 level by Gibraltar.

He qualifies for the national team through his mother as well as also being eligible to play for England.

Scanlon’s international debut comes off the back of four goals in nine under-18 Premier League appearances this season.

He has also featured for United’s under-21 side in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy already this term.

Who could be Man Utd’s next manager after Ten Hag?

His younger brother Luca could also match his achievement in the future.

Also a midfielder, Luca is currently in United’s academy and is a Gibraltar youth international.
