Tyson Fury statement in full as ‘absolutely devastated’ Gypsy King releases apology after withdrawing from Usyk fight


TYSON FURY apologised for calling off his Oleksandr Usyk mega-fight.

The Gypsy King is “absolutely devastated” he can’t face the Ukrainian heavyweight on February 17 after suffering a horror cut in training.

Queensbury Promotions revealed Fury’s injury on Friday “required urgent medical attention and significant stitching”.

And the unbeaten Brit released a statement himself saying he was especially gutted to miss out on the £100million four-title bout in Saudi Arabia as he was otherwise in brilliant physical shape.

Fury, 35, said: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition.

“| feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.

“I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Fury’s nasty injury came less than three weeks before the so-called Fight of the Century.

And he went on social media to insist he Is still keen for the showdown to go ahead at some stage later this year.

The Mancunian posted: “Can’t help getting injured in sparring
but what i can say was Usyk was in trouble i am in fantastic shape. i will reschedule soon as i can. 2024 a massive year for team GK.”

Queensbury Promotions said: “WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury has been forced to postpone his fight with unified Champion Oleksandr Usyk after sustaining a freak cut during a sparring session in Riyadh.

“The cut, which opened above Fury’s right eye, required urgent medical attention and significant stitching, which will obviously require a period of recovery, scuppering any possibility of the fight with Usyk taking place on 17th February in Saudi Arabia.”
