Minnows forced to travel 7,000 kilometres to face Lille in French Cup… only to be thumped 12-0 in horror beating


FRENCH minnows Golden Lion FC were dumped out of the Cup 12-0 – after travelling nearly 7,000km for the match.

Paulo Fonseca’s team dispatched the lside based on the island of Martinique in what has become the club’s biggest-ever win.

Golden Lion travelled the mega journey from ther base, an overseas region of France in the Caribbean.

The team usually competes in the Martinique Division d’Honneur, the top league on the island.

The Martinique outfit made it to the round of 64 in the French Cup after beating Metrople Troyenne 3-2 in the previous round.

The match at Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy did not see a magical result for the minnows.

Fonseca named a fairly strong team to take on the amateur side with the likes of Canada star Jonathan David and former Manchester United wonderkid Angel Gomes in the starting line-up.

Yusuf Yazici opened the scoring in the 11th minute before David made it 2-0 in the 25 minute.

David would go on to net a hat-trick, while team-mate Edon Zhegrova also bagged three goals.

Yazici and Hakon Arnar Haraldsson both snatched braces while Tiago Santos and Amine Messoussa also got on the scoresheet.

Golden Lion only mustered one shot in the match but it failed to trouble goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

After the full-time whistle, the Lille players gave the Golden Lion stars a guard of honour as they made their way off the pitch.

After the match, Fonseca insisted that his team took Golden City seriously.

He said: “We had a serious match, that was the main thing. We respected the opponent and the public.

“It was important to play a match with intensity. The most important thing was to win and qualify.

“Today we did a lot of good things, we pressed high and made a lot of chances. We were very serious.”
