Since taking over Macclesfield FC, a phoenix club of Macclesfield Town, the club secured back-to-back promotions starting in the North West Counties Premier Division in 2020.

With Savage as the director of football for the Northern Premier League side, they have been able to sign former Premier League stars.

Last month former Newcastle star Papiss Cisse was training with the team and they have also signed Everton flop Oumar Niasse on a short-term deal.

And on Tuesday ahead of their clash against Tranmere in the Chesire Senior Cup Simpson featured in their matchday squad.

The 36-year-old left his last club Bristol City in 2022 and revealed last month he was training with Savage’s side while studying for his coaching badges at Old Trafford.

He said on the Filthy Fellas podcast: “No one even knows this but I train at Macclesfield twice a week.

“I have some kind of get up to go to a training ground with the lads, train and kick a football.

“I needed somewhere to go before I started helping with the coaching stuff at United because I was lost for six months.”

Simpson managed to last 78 minutes in his first appearance for Macclesfield and thanks to a hat-trick from Niasse they secured a victory.

The right-back came through the Red Devils academy before making eight appearances for the senior team.

After underwhelming loans at Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, and Blackburn he went on to sign for Newcastle after a season-long loan in 2010.

He then went on to become a crucial part of Leicester City’s Premier League win in 2016.

And ended his professional career after a season at Bristol City in 2022.
